Mangalore: 'Bajpe Airport Set for Next Ten Years': Director

Mangalore, Aug 5: With the present level of modernization, including its new runway and integrated terminal complex, Mangalore Airport at Bajpe is well set to comfortably handle passenger and cargo traffic for the next ten years, declared Airport director M R Vasudeva.

He was addressing a meeting organized by St Aloysius College Alumni Association (SACAA) on Friday August 5.

He observed that though Mangalore Airport was late in modernizing and expansion, it now has the capacity of handling the existing type of aircraft, with capacity to handle 500 passengers at any given time.

He said that larger aircraft can be handled with the extension of the runway at a cost of Rs 250 crores. Responding to a question, he said as of now, at the level of currently operating aircraft, the airport can at no account be declared unsafe.

Vasudeva said that the airport is the first introdution to people, specially foreigners, visiting Mangalore by air and has evoked high praise for its neat, clean and tidy integrated terminal complex. It would be the gateway for products and services of the special economic zone and industries being set up in the nearby region.

Vesudeva made an interesting claim that air travel was the cheapest and quickest mode of long haul travel and explained how, specially for businessmen and professionals, time saved translated into money earned and offset the apparent lower cost of rail, road or sea travel.

Arthur D'Souza, president, SACAA, welcomed, John B Monteiro, convenor, SACAA Talks, introduced the speaker and Naveen Mascarenhas, secretay, proposed the vote of thanks.

People, Air India is blocking every initiative by foreign or private carriers to launch international flights to Mangalore... As long as we have Air India with its " bottomless pit " , we will also have only AIE operating out of M'lore...

Jet & indiGo were recently denied rights thanks to the UPA government protecting AI..... That's why SHJ-IXE (9W) & DXB-IXE (6E) ideas will never take off!!

Please allow Maximum International Airlines to operate from Mangalore, like Emirates, Oman Air, Qatar Airways, Ethihad Air Gulf Air. They have good connecting flights thru out the Gulf and other countries. This will be very beneficial to travel straight to Mangalore, instead of relying only on Air India Express.same time facilities for passenger shuld increase ,specialy Baggage

Jossey Saldhana.....we never discussed about airlines flhying to mangalore. But as the director of the airport he can upgrade the facilities within his limits. I think you people dont know how much hard workinging person Mr.Vasudev is. You must know somany lazy officers are prevailing the department of aviation. But this man tried his level best to bring this airport to this level. Otherwise still we wouldhave not travelled to mangalore directly from gulf. Politicians like current avaiation minister Mr. Vayalar Ravi to blame for not allowing other airlines to operate to this airport. We have big political names like Janardhan poojary, veerappa moily....but they never ever tried to upgrade the airport this level. They were ministers in the central cabinet but of useless. So instead of appriciating & encouraging people like Mr. Vasudev, if somebody comments like you definitely we are discouraging honest people. Believe me...

Congratulations to AAI and to the Mangalore Airport on achieving goal for next decade. We appreciate the eforts have put to bring new look as.In the meantime
the baggage handling facilities very poor and the arrival area or international arrivals is congested. As we know the old airport use to bring out luggage in short time that was appreciated. Hope in future we expect healthy peaceful traveling by Air India Express or any other based flights.
Best wishes Me.Vasudeva and Team Staff.

To all adverse commentators to what director of Mangalore airport has spoken: Please note that the authority to allow other airlines is not assigned to the director's office. The director can present all representations made to his office to higher authorities i.e Ministry of Aviation, DGCA etc who will the final authorities in this matter. Also (this is my understanding), Mangalore Airport is d for customs purpose only and is yet to be d as 'international airpport' whereby other airlines can apply for permission to fly to this port. However, he is responsible for upgrading the facilities within the airport and all you 'learned' passengers, please take time to obtain his email ID and in a mail expressing your concerns.
To all those who complained about bad roads, drainage etc. you are barking at a wrong tree. Certain basic facilities are to be given by local authorities with or without airport and since airport utilization brings in more revenue (not necessarily to govt account but a part of it through taxes), let there be some 'value added initiative' from our local elected representatives and if required, let our business community come out with a venture with specific vehicle entreprise as was done to develop Kochi airport. Many 'Daijiworld' readers will support me in opening their purses for this worthy cause.
    ELSE KANNUR WILL OVERTAKE MANGALORE.

    @Moorthy, Manohar, Stephan.
Operating small aircrafts to Gulf destinations does not make an Airport truly International.
What about people who work or have families outside Gulf?
Can your children ever dream about traveling directly to the USA or Europe from Mangalore?
This is where vision and foresight comes in.

I dont understand why some are being so critical.Mangalore Airport has developed to international standards that too in a record time under the able and honest leadership of Mr Vasudev. Some issues like the the exit road do need to be improved ,but thats not the aiports job but the concerned authorities of the road .

Need of the hour is a good restaurant, coffee shop inside the airport. The one operating has limited items. No dosa, vada!!
Baggage collection area is very very conjested. Hardly any better compared to old facility!! After such a good new terminal building....why are we not getting a spacious baggage collection area? I am sure for the next ten years there will be no improvement in this regard.
Last but not least...less said better about exit roads from airport!! Entry roads...no drain channel...water flowing on road!! What an ugly design..Need to put up with for another decade?

Mr Vasudeva is one of the best and honest person and due to his vision and efforts we have seen lot of improvements and there is still lot to improve and he will try his best to acheive the same.

People who have seen Mangalore Airport for last 10 years will only know this. Dont simply bark anything because you can bark and judge others by your standards without knowing things.

Though efforts are to be appreciated for the modernization of the airport the quality of work done is far below as compared to neighbouring airports. It looks like that the work was done in a hurried fashion though in reality we all know it took ages for completion than the stipulated time.

well said Mr.Vasudeva. for some extent what you have told is correct. even the exit road from the airport is not good it is common in M'lore...But still Mangalore Airport is not d as International Airport.....If it is d International airport then the international traffic will increase and then you can decide for how many years the airport is set.

Well Mr. Vasudeva sir this time you seems to be over confident i bet. Just take an example of your so called neat, tidy & clean current exit road from terminal to main road, which is not even average maintained sir... Once a forigner lands in Bajpe first thing he will find the pothole exit road from your terminal and calculate value for his journey pls understand.

Oh really? Set for ten years? Let us hope so friends. What is probably the case is that this idea is based on current projections. What if the reality changes - like if SEZ becomes a big success. What is the current excess capacity? Only that can give idea of what airpot can handle. If demond is twice current use, will airpot handle or will passpot control itself be overwelmed?

Still it is good to have these discussions. Congratulations to presedent Arthur D'Souza and convineer John Moneiro sir.

Also don't know if anyone else said it, but it should be said: you are welcome, Naveen Mascarenhas.

The baggage handling facilities and the arrival area for International arrivals is still very poor and congested. Passengers have to wait for a long time to collect their baggage, sometimes more than an hour. The wait is even longer if two flights happen to arrive one after another with a short time gap.
