Tripura Woman Sent to Jail for Torturing Husband

Agartala, Aug 8 (IANS): A local court in Tripura Monday sentenced a woman to one-year imprisonment for torturing her husband for 14 long years, police said.

However, judge Sarmistha Mukherjee, under the Probation of Offenders Act, 1958, allowed the woman to stay outside the jail as she has a minor daughter and is a government employee.

The victim had filed a case at the local police station in August 2009. The court, after conducting the trial, gave the judgment Monday.

In another curious case, local family court judge Datamohan Jamatia, considering the appeal of two children, Monday rejected a divorce petition filed by a man.

The petitioner allegedly had been torturing his wife and children for having prevented him from marrying another woman.

The court, according to the police, asked the petitioner to maintain cordial domestic life and take the responsibility of the children for their education and other aspects.
