Centre aiding West Bengal to beat floods


New Delhi, Aug 8 (IANS) The central government is assisting the West Bengal government to undertake bank protection work on rivers along the border with Bangladesh, parliament was told Monday.

Three such works along the river Mahananda had been completed at a cost of Rs.32.20 crore, Minister for Water Resources Pawan Kumar Bansal said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

He said similar work was going on at 10 places at an estimated cost of Rs.63.58 crore along the rivers Punarbhaba, Atrei, Nagar, Karotoya, Kulik and Tangun.

An amount of Rs.32.12 crore had been released as advance assistance to the West Bengal government in 2010-11, he said.
