Delhi Metro to induct eight coach trains in two years

New Delhi, Aug 8 (IANS) The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is planning to induct eight-coach trains to tackle heavy rush on the network by end of 2013, the Delhi Metro chief said Monday.

Delhi Metro chief E. Sreedharan Friday stated this to the Standing Committee on Urban Development, a report from the urban development ministry tabled in parliament said Monday.

"Our major problem today is severe overcrowding in these trains for which we have taken steps to order more number of coaches," Sreedharan was quoted as saying.

"The delivery of the coaches will start in September 2012 and the order will be completed by December 2013. 31 four-coach trains will be converted into eight-coach trains," a Delhi Metro official said.

The Delhi Metro also official said that two busy lines, Dwarka Sector 21 to Noida City Centre and Yamuna Bank to Vaishali, will be getting the eight-coach trains.

"This transition from four- to six-coach trains has helped decongest crowds and adding two more coaches in the busiest line, will further decongest the crowd and it will be a comfortable ride for the commuters," the DMRC official added.

Sreedharan also informed by about October this year, all trains in Line II (Jahangirpuri to Huda city Centre) and Line III (Dwarka Sec-21 to NOIDA City Centre) would be fully six-train coaches.

The Delhi Metro runs around 2,000 train trips and ferries 1.6 million passengers every day.
