Sullia, Sep 1: Three labourers, who were standing by the side of the road, were killed and another got injured as a car hit them at Adkar near here on Thursday August 31 on Mysuru-Mani highway.
The deceased are identified as Chennappa Lamani (40), Rekappa Malladath (51) and Malthesh Gangappa Ukkunda (53), all natives of Venkatapura village of Ranebennur taluk of Haveri district. Venkappa (40) is injured and is recuperating in the hospital.
The car was moving from Madikeri to Mangaluru. The driver of the car lost control over the vehicle and hit the four labourers who were standing near a hotel. Later, the car hit a truck and came to a halt. Chennappa, who was seriously injured succumbed on the way to Sullia hospital. Rekappa and Malthesh breathed their last as they were taken to hospital in Mangaluru for higher treatment.
No one in the car was hurt. A case is filed against Murthy who was driving the car.
Ten labourers of Ranebennur had arrived to Sullia on the request of a local contractor for some work. They were lodged in a room in front of the hotel at Adyar. Four of them were standing by the roadside on when the accident took place. The labourers have farm land back in Ranebennur. As the rains are scanty, they could not do the agricultural work. Hence, they came to Sullia for masonry work.
