Heavy Rain Lashes City, Citizens Trudge through Water-logged Roads

Bangalore, Aug 11 (DHNS):
Heavy rain lashed the City Thursday evening, spoiling the last minute shopping plans of many preparing for the Varamahalakshmi festival on Friday.

Occurring at peak hour, the rain made it difficult for people to reach their destinations, uprooted trees and led to water-logging in many areas.

The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) received a few complaints of manholes overflowing in areas such as Gayatrinagar, Hanumanthanagar, Bagalakunte, Viveknagar and Ejipura.

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) received complaints about tree fall at Challaghatta Main Road near Old Airport Road and at Hebbal. Rescue teams rushed to clear the tree branches blocking the roads.

No injuries reported

A tree fell on electricity lines near Challaghatta, off Old Airport Road, around 8 pm and the BBMP East Zone office sent an officer to clear the road for traffic. Another tree fell at 38th Main, Banashankari 2nd Stage around 9 pm. No one was injured.

Intermediate Ring Road from Old Airport Road to Koramangala saw bumper-to-bumper traffic due to water logging near Oasis Mall.

A more serious inundation was at the stormwater drain at Ejipura. Traffic jams were also reported from Vannarpet to Viveknagar where the rain caught people attending Thursday special prayers at the Infant Jesus Church unawares.

Kengeri and surrounding areas received 28 mm of rainfall in a short span of time. Electronics City and surrounding areas reported hardly one mm of rain.
