Karkala: 'State to Get 34 Postgraduate Colleges' - Minister Acharya

Karkala, Aug 12: Udupi district in-charge minister, Dr V S Acharya, said that the state government proposes to open 34 postgraduate colleges in the state, in addition to the existing 40, shortly. He also informed that the government has planned to set up Janapada University in the state within a short time.

He was speaking after participating in the capacity of the chief guest, in a function organized at Sri Bhuvanendra College here for laying foundation stone for the new building of Sri Manjunath Pai Memorial Postgraduate Centre, and extended section of Sri Bhuvanendra Hostel, and inaugural of the new building of Sharada Sadana on Thursday August 11.

Acharya pointed out that scores of students from outside the state have been flocking Karnataka because of the initiatives undertaken to improve the quality of education here. He added that support of the private sector is very much essential for improving educational facilities, and claimed that Karnataka is the only state in the country where quality education is being provided at affordable cost. He noted that the state has been implementing the suggestions made by Knowledge Commission, and that a meeting is being convened on August 18 to discuss issues relating to education.

The minister said that Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, was impressed at the performance of the state, and that he had assured to extend full support for the initiatives aimed at the development of the state.

Manipal University chancellor, Dr Ramdas Pai, presided over the programme. Manipal Academy of General Education president, Dr A Krishna Rao, laid the foundation stone for the extended section of the hostel. President of Manjunath Damodar Pai Charitable Trust, B Ganapati Pai, promised wholehearted support for the development of the college.

At the programme, Dr Ramdas Pai, B Ganapati Pai, and Sujay Kumar Shetty, engineer, were felicitated. Shantaram Kamat, treasurer of Sri Bhuvanendra College Trust, welcomed. Secretary of the trust, Prof B Padmanabh Gowda, delivered introductory address. Head of the department of economics, Prof Y Pandunranga Nayak, proposed vote of thanks.
