'Congress Did not even Check facts before Making False allegations'

New Delhi, Aug 14 (IANS) Accusing the Congress of resorting to vendetta politics, activist Anna Hazare said the party did not even check facts before making false allegations against him on the basis of Justice Sawant Commission, which probed into trusts run by him.

Hazare said he himself asked the then Maharashtra government to file a case against him on the basis of the allegations that surfaced after the commission report.

He said he even went on an indefinite fast and demanded an inquiry from the state government, but no case has been filed till now.

In a clear attempt to mislead the people, Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari chose not to mention the report of the Sukhthankar Committee, which was formed to study and take action on the Justice Sawant Commission report, said Hazare.

The Sukhthankar Committee had found all the allegations against me baseless, he said.

Hazare said that the Congress was losing ground in the fight against corruption and it was a Congress-ruled government which honoured him with high civilian honours like Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri for his social service.

Why doesn't the governnment withdraw these awards if it thinks I was corrupt, asked Hazare.

He said cornered by the growing support for his crusade against corruption, the Congress had touched a new low by raising absolutely baseless and unwarranted allegations against him.
