Nehru Maidan was known as Central Maidan 65 years ago when we received our God given gift called "Swathanthra". Central Maidan was named as Nehru Maidan after Pandit Nehru visited Mangalore in early 50's.

65 years ago we all walked to the Central Maidan in the evening for the Independence Day rally where they relayed the program that took place in New Delhi where the British Union Jack was lowered and the Indian flag was hoisted in the presence of Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Nehru and the rest of the leaders who faught for the freedom of India. Lord Mountainbatten was present as our Viceroy General of India who handed over the charge to President Rajendra Prasad in the year 1950.

We listen to the words of Mahatma Gandhi and Pundit Nehru that were broadcasted over the radio that was relayed to us thru the speakers that were hung up high on tall bamboo sticks at the Central Maidan. We still remember Mahatma Gandhi's message on the value and beauty of freedom. We still remember his emotional sentiments over the creation of Pakistan both in the Western front and also in the Eastern front which is now known as Bangla Desh.

Lots of history has passed under the bridge over the past 65 years. Lots of lessons well learnt thru the impact of freedom of a largest British colony that undermined the strength of the mighty British Empire.

65 years have been an eye opener for almost four generations. God have mercy upon us all because we are children of one God.
