Silver coins from Early 20th Century unearthed in Tripura

Agartala, Aug 15 (IANS) More than 20 silver coins of the early 20th century, with images of King Edward VII and George V, were unearthed in northern Tripura Monday, a senior government official said. They will be handed over to the state government museum.

"While labourers were digging to lay the groundwork for a building at Kamalpur in northern Tripura, they came upon a metallic pot containing these coins dating from 1903 to 1913," the district official told IANS on phone from Kamalpur, 130 km north of here.

Renowned numismatist Jahar Acherjee said that these Indo-British coins, with the approval of the then queen, had been put in circulation by the then British rulers in India. Such finds are not uncommon in these parts.

"In the tea garden belt of the northeastern region, occasionally these Indo-British coins have been found," said Acherjee, who runs a large private museum in Agartala.
