Thousands of Students at Alva's College Remember Nation's Martyrs

Moodbidri, Aug 15: Independence Day celebrations by the Alva's Education Foundation here were held on a large scale with more than 10,000 students and another 1000 members of staff participating in the ceremony.
The celebrations were held at the B V Karanth open ground.
Padma Bhushan Dr B M Hegde, who was the chief guest, said that though the country had achieved freedom from the British, its citizens were still slaves to western ideas and unable to think on their own. "Progress can come only when there is peace and harmony in the society. The secret to a healthy life lies in giving and receiving adequate love and care, he said."
The 92nd birthday of Anand Alva was also celebrated on the occasion. Addressing the gathering, Indian hockey legend Dhanraj Pillay said that the blessings and guidance of his parents, family and elders had brought him success.
As many as 92 candles were lit to mark the occasion.
Sarojini Alva, Vijaynath Shetty, Vivek Alva, Vinay Alva and others were present. Chairman of Alva's Education Trust Dr Mohan Alva also spoke on the occasion. Venugopal Shetty compered.
The celebrations were truly a visual treat with thousands and thousands of students in saffron, white and green, dressed to match the Tricolour, participated in the celebrations.
