Catholic priest ends life following 'anti-national' FIR for sharing Manipur violence post

Daijiworld Media Network – Bhopal (EP)

Bhopal, Sep 18: Father Anil Francis, the manager of St Alphonsa Academy in Garhakota, Sagar district, Madhya Pradesh, has tragically taken his own life. His suicide comes in the wake of a police case that was filed against him a month ago for sharing a post related to Manipur violence on WhatsApp.

The FIR filed against Father Anil Francis accused him of insulting the national flag, and this legal trouble appears to have weighed heavily on his mind, according to priests from the Sagar diocese.

It's worth noting that the post shared by Father Anil Francis did not contain any content related to the national flag. Rather, some groups had allegedly pressured the police into registering the case against him, as stated by Fr Jose Malekudy.

Father Anil Francis was a dedicated individual who adhered to the principles he taught, emphasized Fr Sabu Puthanapurakal, the PRO of the diocese.

"The Christian organizations and priests in Madhya Pradesh, including Father Anil Francis, have been targeted by the BJP. Furthermore, the British government had leased land to the diocese for St Francis Orphanage, which has been operating there for the past 50 years. However, the lease has not been renewed, despite multiple applications submitted. Last year, there were attempts to relocate the children associated with the orphanage with the assistance of the Children Welfare Committee. Some priests who intervened in an effort to prevent this were taken to the police station and assaulted during the process," he alleged.

Very tragic and unfortunate. Fr. Anil lacked courage to fight back. Millions would have supported him in his fight for justice. Insulting national flag was a false allegation to frame him and make the case stronger.

Communal forces with malicious minds are continuously targetting the Minority Community by levelling absurd allegations and meting out harrassment. The Police are of no protection to Christians. To vent out and spit the Venom of hatred for the good work done by our Priests and Religious Sisters, these communal forces roam sround to devour them. They are all protected. On the other side, suicides by religious people is increasing. This is due to the fear these forces have imbibed in them

Very sad. May his soul rest in peace. I hold the British accountable for not relocating Indian Christians to Christian countries. We are being persecuted continuously here.

You cannot hold the British accountable for it since there was no demand from Christians for relocation or separate homeland. On the contrary some Britishers, now called Anglo Indians, preferred to stay back in India.

Anyone who commits suicide, would do it only after coming to a conclusion that he or she cannot continue with the situation that they face. Being a priest, I strongly feel that he should have faced the persecution and fought for the people he was concerned. Sadly he could not face the situation and thought of ending his life. Afterall, he was also a humanbeing. He was not the first religious leader arrested or targeted for "anti-nation activities". The 80+ old priest, Stan Swamy, who fought for tribal rights in Jharkhand, was chained to his legs until he was on his deathbed as if he were a terrorist. Since BJP came to power, there are numerous such arrests of activists, journalists, etc. for questioning government action. I feel the regime is so powerful with draconian laws that the citizens cannot fight even peacefully. Only God can save India.

This authoritarian and dictatorial government have decided to make SC/ST and minorities as 3rd class citizens. They have to live like slaves with them... They have taken all the measures to suppress any force which raises against them with stringent laws... They have hijacked all the institutions replacing with their stooges.. If 2024 fails, then there are only 2 solutions left for all of us... Either God should do miracle or entire SC/ST, tribals, minorities and like minded majority people should start massive freedom movement which had happened against Britishers, without fearing for loss of life, property and imprisonment... No one would want to live like slave and fear and any freedom country. This country belongings to all and no one organization or party can hijack it..

If your a religious person or priest swami or maulana, keep out of politics first thing. Your duty is to preach the word of God and not indulge in unwanted unnecessary things which will land you in controversy. If you as a religious person consider prayer powerful, pray instead of sharing unwanted things and never indulge in politics.

It's not suicide its sacrifice. Only those who every loved unconditionally or experienced an ounce of unconditional love will understand this step takes by Fr. Anil. The justice which won't be achieved in this realm will be achieved in spirit. And that Justice no man will escape.
