Puttur: WhatsApp KBC lottery scam - Woman cheated of Rs 12.93 lacs

Puttur, Sep 20: A resident of Chikmudnoor village in the taluk, Zeenat Banu, has fallen victim to a WhatsApp lottery scam.

According to her complaint, an unidentified individual contacted her via WhatsApp in May 2022, claiming to represent the "Kaun Banega Crorepati" program. The caller informed Zeenat that she had won a lottery prize of Rs 25 lacs.

However, the fraudster insisted that she could only claim the prize after paying taxes and other associated charges. This transaction was supposed to occur between May 2022 and September 13, 2023. Following this, the scammer fraudulently transferred Rs 12,93,200 from Zeenat's bank accounts.

A case has been registered at the Dakshina Kannada District CEN Crime Police Station under Crime no: 29/2023, invoking clause 66(D) of the IT Act, along with sections 417 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
