Mangalore: Chida Naik, Vijayanath, Malli Conferred Sports Plus Awards

Mangalore, Aug 16: Jeppu Chidanand Naik, Doha, Vijayanath Vittal Shetty Mijar, and Rakesh Malli, were felicitated at an impressive function held here on Monday August 15. The three were honoured with ‘Sports Plus’ awards for their contributions to the fields of sports organization and sports activities. The awards were handed over by the country’s ace hockey player, Dhanraj Pillay.
The felicitation was accorded to the trio at the prize distribution ceremony organized at Nehru Maidan here in connection with the 15th Independence Cup Cricket Tournament organized at Nehru Maidan here. The tournament was organized by Sports Promoters Club. Dhanraj Pillay participated as one of the chief guests of the function.
Expressing his happiness at the tournament aimed at bringing together people from different fields and achieving harmonious public relations, Pillay said he will try to attend this tournament every year if possible. He also expressed happiness at the way the event was organized by A Sadanand Shetty, president, Sports Promoters Club. Pillay also hoped that alongside the proposed cricket stadium, a well-equipped hockey ground will be set up in Dakshina Kannada district soon. He wanted hockey to gain prominence along with cricket in the country.
Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner, Dr Chennappa Gowda, who was also a chief guest at the event, said that the district administration has taken initiative to build an international level cricket stadium nearby the city, and sought support and cooperation from people and sports bodies towards this venture.
Police commissioner, Seemant Kumar Singh, managing director of Karnataka Bank Ltd, P Jayaram Bhat, and several other dignitaries were present.
Under the aegis of Sports Promoters Club, various dignitaries with significant contributions to the field of sports were honoured.
The tournament was inaugurated by district in-charge minister, Krishna J Palemar. The team of the police commissioner won the trophy, while the team of the deputy commissioner was placed second. Teams of journalists, Mangalore Eleven, and city mayor, also participated.
