We Also Won't Allow Undermining of Parliament: BJP

New Delhi, Aug 17 (IANS): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will not allow anyone to undermine parliamentary democracy but would not side with the government either in "curbing" a citizen's right to protest, party leader Sushma Swaraj said Wednesday.

"We are with the parliamentary process. We won't allow anybody to undermine parliamentary democracy. But civil rights are above all. The country is free. I reject your policy of curbing citizen rights," Sushma Swaraj, who is leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, said in the house.

She was speaking on the debate on the arrest of social activist Anna Hazare, who was taken into custody in the capital Tuesday ahead of his planned fast-unto-death for a more powerful anti-graft legislation.

Earlier, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had said in a statement that Hazare may be inspired by high ideals in his campaign to set up a strong and effective anti-corruption watchdog but the path he had chosen "to impose his draft of a bill upon parliament is totally misconceived and fraught with grave consequences for our parliamentary democracy".

Sushma Swaraj sharply criticised the government and accused it of undermining parliamentary procedures by selecting a joint committee of government representatives and Anna Hazare's team for drafting the Lokpal bill.

"Who undermined the parliamentary procedures first, Mr Prime Minister? When Hazare came to use for the support, we asked him why you didn't include opposition in the drafting committee.

"He said he had insisted on opposition's inclusion but the government refused," the leader of the opposition said.

She also spoke at length in favour of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and said Home Minister P. Chidambaram had developed a phobia of saffron parties.

"Don't know what happens to the home minister when the RSS supports any campaign… (Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali)Geelani comes openly and talks about disintegrating India. Delhi Police didn't feel threatened then. But when you see anybody wearing saffron robes, you unleash... force," she said.

She didn't refer directly to Congress' charges that Hazare's campaign was supported by the RSS and rightwing Hindu groups.

"Why do you get irritated by the RSS… The RSS gives rise to patriotic parties in the country. There are seven chief ministers in India who owe allegiance to the RSS. But I don't know what happens to you by a mere mention of the RSS," she asked.

If Anna's aim was indeed the presentation of a "strong" LOKPAL BILL, he could very well have arranged for such a bill to be presented in Parliament through any Member as a Private Member's Bill. That, instead, he chose to resort to such gimmicks outside Parliament when Parliament was in fact in session, reveals his true intentions i.e. to destabilize the duly elected Government and to help BJP attempt to capture power through the backdoor. It is significant that, while insisting that the PM and the CJI be brought under the purview of Lokpal, Anna is vehemently against treating NGO's similarly. Obviously he does not want the sources of funds for his gimmicks to be scrutinized publicly !

This movement does not need your support. This is not about Congress or BJP or Left Parties. It is about eradication of corruption and you can join or support unconditionally if you want to be the part of it. When you say "WE" if you remember "WE THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE AND BY THE PEOPLE" we are ok. You are forgetting the basics of democracy after the election. Without our votes or support there is no "YOU" the member of parliments or ministers. It is your duty and of course you get paid and even pension for serving the people. People of India are tired of your politics. Be it is BJP or Congress or the Left. We can't find any difference. So if you have good intention to help and serve the people you are welcome and no need to worry about you being targeted.

What BJP means is that if Anna's lokpal gets passed, many from BJP will come under scanner. Hence it will oppose the bill. This is the case with most of the parties.
All parties are just making a show for Anna. No party is interested in country or bill.

While Anna's fight against corruption is highly appreciable, his methods are against democratic principles. Consequences of demolishing democratic institutions are grave. Just look at some of our neighboring countries to understand the consequences ..

This is not the arm twisting. What government doing, bu curbing the basic rights of citizen is called arm twisting. As Mahatma famously said - "An unjust law/givernment is itself a species of violence". bapu would have choose the same Satyagrah which Anna is doing. This is not arm twisting. This is a common man asking his government(choosen government) to work for him and put people accountable for their misdeed. Whats wrong in it? Why congress govt is so affraid of common man? Another Bapu's quote - "For me every ruler is alien that defies public opinion." Where is the public opinion? If you think Anna is arm twisting, you should check where your alliegiances carefuuly.

The current Facebook generation needs to understand first of all what is corruption? As far as Anna Hazare movement is concerned, youngsters first need to understand - is really goverment's version of Lokpal is really bad? No. It does not contain PM to be included thats all. The Prime Minister should be excluded from the purview of the bill as he is already covered under the Prevention of Corruption Act and the CBI can investigate. Morever if that clause is included then the bill could be used by foreign powers to “destabilise” the nation as if the Prime Minister was included under the Bill, he cannot function as he would have to focus more on defending himself against the accusations. It would seriously dent the PM’s authority even if charges were proved wrong. Moreover parties like nonsecular or religious minded polictical parties will try to oppose the PM , who MAY BE A broad minded and nice person. Offcourse if a PM is found to be a fraud, nationwide protest would be made and PM can be removed. So there is no need for PM to be included in Lokpal Bill. Anna and presently even other parties , desperate to be back in public eyes and power, are cashing on , in this so called jokepal bill, introduced by Govt. Reality is Lokpal is not really as made out to be by some sections of society and The establishment of Lokayukta as said by Govt will tackle state-level corruption and will serve as a helping hand to the Supreme Court too as probing in every case of CBI is not possible.

Include the PM and MPs in the version placed before the parliament. 4 MPs are in jail and 150 others have cases pending. What is wrong in including them?

we cannot erradicate corruption thro' Bills. people should be given moral education. politicians/educationalists social activist should come forward to remove corruption through mass awareness. we should not do anything which will tell upon the the health of democracy by firefighting only. charity begins at home. we should have clean image in society.Common wealth games, 2g spectrum scandals are big issues no doubt but what about when we buy tickets in cinemahall in black. There are no of incidence in our daily life where we are breeding coruption. May be small. I hope 5 precepts of Lord Buddha can help in erradicting this cancer which has entered to a section of people who have lust for treasure. peaple should know the reality that nothing will go with us when we breath last.

When it comes to a good Opposition the BJP has triumphed over the ruling party mostly. You may see the poor performance of Congress in Karnataka where it had situation on a platter but failed to get public approbation which was cornered by the JD(S). However, the same cannot be said of the BJP as a Ruling party. They have generally messed it up as much as the Congress. Taking again example of Karnataka, they are still groping to finalize a ministry and the indicted corrupt elements are still pushing hard to gain entry.
