All for Anna : Delhi lawyers support Hazare

New Delhi, Aug 17 (IANS) Lawyers here organised a demonstration near the Delhi High Court Wednesday, marching to India Gate to support activist Anna Hazare's call for a stronger Lokpal bill.

Around a hundred lawyers assembled outside the premises of the high court under the banner of the Adhivakta Parishad Delhi Pradesh (APDP), a lawyers' wing.

"Jan Lokpal proposed by the civil society is an effective instrument, weapon and machinery to curb the corruption in the democratic society with strict hand," said the APDP in a statement.

Saying Hazare's "talks have weight", advocate Virendar Pratap Singh said: "There is blatant corruption and government is trying to suppress someone who is protesting peacefully. We are emotionally and sentimentally involved with the relevant issue."

"The government established under the constitution itself has violated the fundamental rights and liberty of the citizens and is acting contrary to the basic features of the constitution," said the statement.

Lawyers promised to extend all assistance to Hazare's movement and raised slogans against the government.

Hazare was arrested here Tuesday ahead of his fast for an effective anti-corruption law. Though he was released later in the evening, he has refused to move out of the jail until he is allowed to hold his protest without any conditions.
