Ankola (Uttara Kannada), Sep 26: A youth of Ankola has taken to apiculture in a big way and is seeing success. What started with one or two boxes of bee-keeping initially has turned lucrative for this youth who is now engaged in the activity with 500 boxes and is earning an annual income of Rs 10 lac.
Ganesh Nayak hails from Avache in Ankola. He ran a studio for a living. He started off bee-keeping with one or two boxes of bees out of interest. But, he chose those bees that were living on the edge such as ‘tuduve’ and ‘misari’ bees.
Ganesh Nayak is making use of waste boxes to carry out bee-keeping instead of using earthen pots or bamboo that are normally used for bee-keeping.
Ganesh Nayak is rearing Misari bees that are mostly living on the edge. He produces 2 quintals of honey annually which gets sold mostly in Belagavi, Bengaluru, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The Misari honey bee is available at a price of Rs 2,500 a kilo.
Ganesh Nayak is going about rearing ways rather lovingly and is not mechanical in approach.
