Mukherjee to Lead High-Level Business Delegation to US

New Delhi, Aug 18 (IANS): Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, accompanied by three other cabinet colleagues, senior government officials and corporate leaders, will visit the United States next month to attract American investment in India, an official said Thursday.

The Indian ministers are scheduled to visit New York, Washington and Chicago.

In New York, Mukherjee will address a special session of the eighth annual Institutional Investors' Forum meeting organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

"The finance minister will address a special session Sept 21," Sandip Samaddar, FICCI's Joint Director (Americas), told IANS.

He said three other cabinet ministers - Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma, Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah - are also scheduled to address the forum to be held Sept 22-23.

"The actual forum will be held Sept 22-23, but a special session is being organised Sept 21, which will be addressed by the finance minister," Samaddar said.

At least five secretaries of different departments including finance, commerce and telecom are also scheduled to address the forum.

"Through the forum we are trying to promote investment opportunities available in India," the FICCI official said.

In Washington, Mukherjee will address the annual meeting of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund to be held Sept 23-25.

The Indian ministers are also scheduled to visit Chicago, where they will address the US-India Economic Opportunities and Synergies Summit to be held Sept 20.

The summit is being organised by the Executives' Club of Chicago in partnership with FICCI, the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and The Wall Street Journal.
