I was born in Malnad region of Karnataka. Growing up we not only spoke Konkani at home, we were also exposed to Tulu, Tamil and Kannada. In the absence of a Konkani script, our written communication in Konkani was in Kannada. Kannada thus became our lifeline. Being able to speak and write several languages is a special gift. Languages are special vehicles in the development of our Brains and also our heritage and culture. How many people can dream in several languages? I often dream in Kannada the language which is a part and parcel of my life, even though my mother tongue is Konkani. We are a product of our culture and society around us. If Kannada has influenced Naa D'Souza to be a jewel in the crown of our Kannada heritage, let us all join hands in recognizing his achievements. My children in USA want to learn writing their names in Kannada! My genes must have passed the desire on to them. Before the advent of the Internet, it was hard to find Kannada literature in North America. I used to correspond heavily only in Kannada with my friend Vishveshwaraih in Bangalore. When friends brought back spices from India wrapped in Kannada newspaper, I used to piece together the paper shreds to read it. I have been in North America for the past 35 years and I dearly miss the part of my Kannada heritage as well as Konkani. My daily ritual starts with reading Kannada news on the internet in the morning while CNN in English language blares all day long. Let us teach our children as many languages as they can learn, developing intellect is not a shame.

Note:Though I have used a word "mangaloreans" this is applicable only for some.

I don't hate my mother tongue But, Mangaloreans should learn from him, they don't appreciate the greatness of its regional language (Kannada). There are many Catholics who ignores Kannada and show interest towards Hindi and feel great about it. Hindi is not a National language.

@Gabriel Vaz: As I noticed Konkani people from other districts like Shimoga/Sagar join civil (Govt) services and mingle with the society, They don't go for housemaid jobs in Gulf.

There are enough people who writes for Konakani, Dr: Na DSouza is only person, whoz representing our whole community and its extremely important. Just like Nisar Ahmad, though his mother tongue is Urdu he's contributed a lot to Kannada.

Congratulations Mr D'Souza. I think his full name is Norbert. I remember reading about him in a newspaper article. Though he is a Roman Catholic, to my knowledge he confines himself to writing in Kannada and not in Konkani language. I guess that may be because he hails from Sagar in Shimoga district, which again is second-hand information through a newspaper article. Though Mangaloreans feel happy that one of thier own has received the highest literary award from the Central Sahitya Academy for his writing in Kannada, Mr D'Souza rarely if ever writes in Konkani and feels comfortable in his literary pursuits in Kannada, the language of our State.
