Mangalore, Aug 20: Herman Moegling, despite coming from a different cultural background has served immensely to Kannada literature. This has added to the glory of ‘Kannada’ language all across, opined president of Kannada Sahithya Academy, Prof. M H Krishnaiah, here on Friday August 19.

He was speaking at the valedictory of international seminar on ‘Herman Moegling-200th year of his commemoration’ jointly organized by Karnataka Theological College, Karnataka Sahithya Academy and Kittel Foundation at KTC Bishop Jathanna Hall here.

Born in Germany, Moegling started the first Kannada newspaper ‘Mangaloora Samachara’ in Mangalore in the year 1843. The motive behind publishing the newspaper was one that was beyond religion. While going through the newspaper, one can clearly make out that Moegling had deep interest in the life, language and culture of this land and that traditional Kannada literature was collated by him.

In the two day seminar an attempt was made to get an insight into the personality of Moegling. Prof. Krishnaiah appealed for Moegling’s  work to be translated to Kannada.

Also on the occasion ‘A Guide to the Basel Mission India Material in the Mission 21 Archive’ of Paul Jenkins, a senior researcher of Switzerland was released.

Karnataka Theological College Principal Dr Hanibal Cabral, director Rathnakar Sadananda among others were present.
