Experts Call for Balance in Anna Protest Coverage

New Delhi, Aug 20 (IANS): Amid increasing debate on the role of the media in covering Anna Hazare's anti-corruption protest, experts have stressed the need for more balance and objectivity and the need to eschew biased and sensational reporting, particularly by television.

"There is a need for more balance and objectivity in the media coverage of Anna Hazare's protest. The media has been uncritical of Team Anna and the unreasonable statements of his associates," Siddhartha Varadarajan, Editor, The Hindu, told IANS.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni had questioned Hazare's remarks that media and his supporters were like a family and wondered if the agitation was being fostered by the media.

Varadarajan described Anna's demand that the government pass the Lokpal Bill by Aug 31 as unreasonable and said that it undermined parliamentary procedure. "A standing committee is examining the Bill," he said. "The legislative process can go along with Anna's agitation."

He further said, "I am disturbed by the cult of Anna being promoted by electronic medium. But the print medium too needs to introspect on the issue."

Echoing similar views, senior journalist Prem Shankar Jha said there was need for more balance between news and analysis. "What is passing off as analysis on TV is a fight between the representatives of political parties," Jha told IANS.

According to Jha, the print medium has been more balanced in comparison to the electronic medium in the coverage. "There is repetition and exaggeration on TV," he said.

Media experts have called for greater objecivity and balance in the coverage of social activist Anna Hazare's anti-corruption stir.

Commentator Sanjoy Hazarika, drawing special attention to the role of television, said that the media's alleged nexus with politicians and corporates should be probed.

"Public anger is usually directed against the politicians," said Hazarika, who has worked with the New York Times. "The focus should now be on the alleged nexus between the corporates, media and the politicians."

He argued that similar agitations in the past have had little effect. "Neither is the media looking at the process nor does is it have an open mind," Hazarika said.

"If the media levels allegations, the other side should also be given a chance to defend its position," senior journalist Bhaskar Roy said. "Media should act responsibly while reflecting reality on the ground."

The comments follow the impact of the media attention on three-year-old Charvi Chawla, who reportedly broke her fast only when Anna offered her water.

However, a section of opinion maintained that media coverage of the Hazare protest is not deliberate and is guided purely by popular demand.

"The coverage of Hazare's protest is neither intentional nor planned," group editor Shravan Garg of Hindi daily Dainik Bhaskar said. Garg expressed hope that the Anna frenzy will come down as the media has already started analysing its role.

"Tomorrow if another big event unfolds, the media will switch over to it," Garg told IANS. "The media is just catering to popular demand. Public sentiment is against corruption, which is getting reflected in the media."

Noting a difference in the nature of the print and the electronic media, senior journalist Swapan Dasgupta said, by and large, the TV channels tended to respond somewhat hastily to populist mood.

"They want to provide ammunition to support their coverage and take a little liberty with objectivity," Dasgupta said.

The RSS is getting a piggy back ride by using Anna and his team .They have in the past tried to destabilze the govt. That the RSS has a role in this was evident by the backstage photo at the initial part of the fasting venue. No one seems interested in joining their cadre so want to get their objectives done by hook or crook! Anna is by no means a gandhian! His janlokpal bill only creates a body which will be a kind of super power, which will obviously be corrupt given the kind of power and unaccountability it will enjoy! Threatening a democratically elected govt with dire consequences if they dont pass Anna's bill within the deadline set by him is not at all a gandhian way of struggle! Gandhiji believed in the supremacy of the parliament unlike Anna! Anna is just an old guy with a lot of ego !!He just wants everyone to listen to him and only him! Please people wake up and stop acting like fools! Read more about him and be knowledgeable !learn to criticize those who claim to know everything! Only then will India develop ! Please dont let this wonderful nation be a laughing stock in front of the foreigners!

    About robert vadra.

Many of his critics slam media for not reporting his assets which he made in limited time. Robert became a billionaire (its alleged but no proof recorded) within small period of time. He, along with other VIPs like HH the Dalai Lama and the Chief Justice of India, has been exempted from frisking at airports. The list of such VIPs was compiled and forwarded to the concerned authorities by the government on 26 September 2005. Others on the list include the President, the Prime Minister, former Presidents and PMs and SPG protectees.[3] This move has come under scrutiny since more important entities on the warrant of precedence, like the Chiefs of Army, Navy and Air Force staff are not extended this waiver. However, BCAS Commissioner S. R. Mehra declined comment

Let's just assume the Lokpal bill is passed following which there'll a Lokpal at New Delhi and a Lokayukta in every state. All these offices will be manned by citizens of this country and not all citizens are Hazare's and Hegde's.
Majority are Kalmadi's Raja's, Yeddys the list is endless. In a country where 'fence grazing the field' is the order of the day, unless unless there's a strong political will(initiated by representatives chosen by the people) to curb the corruption or any other malpractice for that matter, effectiveness of such a bill seems rather skeptical.

We must not forget that campaigns are good as long as they are meant to awaken the masses. In this case it is doing a perfect job by awakening each and every one of us. But the danger lies in converting the campaigns into platforms for major decision making. This has to be left to instituions like the parliamant, judiciary and the consitution. If not we will end up discussing and deciding every national issue even those that are security concerns on such platforms, leading us to become a banana republic policed be a few.

As noted social activist and National Advisory Council (NAC) member Aruna Roy said that giving widespread powers to an unelected body is a "threat to democracy". The Lokpal legislation should be thoroughly deliberated again by activists, lawmakers and all other stakeholders. Roy, a Magsaysay award winner, said the Jan Lokpal bill is a "giant, complicated exercise" as it tried to extend from the prime minister to a peon. She felt that the suggestion of dual duties curbing corruption and redressing grievances under the Jan Lokpal was not feasible. The whistleblowers' protection bill too should be revised to deal with the increasing attacks and threats against RTI activists, she suggested. "The Lokpal bill should not become an issue of adamant stances, political rivalries and personality-driven agitations. What we need is a sincere, detailed debate for legislation of immense social significance and public concern," she said. Roy's campaign for right to information led to the enactment of the RTI Act - in Rajasthan in 2000 and five years later at the national level.

To an extent there is truth in it. The media should have reasoned what was best for India’s interest and contacted other experts around India for better result than blindly blowing the issue out of proportion for their TRP rating.

Firstly, there are wider views and opinions about how to curb corruption other than the one drafted by the Bushans & Co. in Hazare team

Secondly, there are far more experts in India and abroad who could have given advises through national consensus

Thirdly, Hazare found two member of a same family like Bushans are the best persons among 1.20 billion Indians to draft national based anti-corruption bill.

Hazare should have formed a committee to a panel to draft the anti-corruption bill which has so many minute aspects to tackle this monstrous all level corruptions. The committee should emphasize more on exposing the corrupt officials, rewarding the whistle blowers, the power to dismiss the corrupt officials and politicians if they repeat the offence more than three times, to involve members of social organisations like Lions & Rotary as whistle blower for every department and political leaders and so on.

We have one of the best laws to check all evils in the society but none of them are implemented for lack of strong whistle blowers, better transparency, a centrally computer controlled database at every level and the applications have to pass through such super-computer databases before issuing any official documents to the applicants...

*10 things to know about Anna Hazare 'n Jan Lok Pal Bill.. !*

    *1. Who is Anna Hazare?

    An ex-army man. Fought 1965 Indo-Pak War

    2. What's so special about him?

He built a village Ralegaon Siddhi in Ahamad Nagar district, Maharashtra

    3. So what?

This village is a self-sustained model village. Energy is produced in the
village itself from solar power, biofuel and wind mills.

In 1975, it used to be a poverty clad village. Now it is one of the richest
village in India. It has become a model for self-sustained, eco-friendly &
    harmonic village.

    4. Ok,...?

This guy, Anna Hazare was awarded Padma Bhushan and is a known figure for
    his social activities.

    5. Really, what is he fighting for?

He is supporting a cause, the amendment of a law to curb corruption in
    India.

    6. How that can be possible?

He is advocating for a Bill, The Jan Lokpal Bill (The Citizen Ombudsman
Bill), that will form an autonomous authority who will make politicians
(ministers), beurocrats (IAS/IPS) accountable for their deeds.

    8. It's an entirely new thing right..?

In 1972, the bill was proposed by then Law minister Mr. Shanti Bhushan.
Since then it has been neglected by the politicians and some are trying to
change the bill to suit thier theft (corruption).

    7. Oh.. He is going on a hunger strike for that whole thing of passing a
Bill ! How can that be possible in such a short span of time?

The first thing he is asking for is: the government should come forward and
announce that the bill is going to be passed.

Next, they make a joint committee to DRAFT the JAN LOKPAL BILL. 50%
goverment participation and 50% public participation. Because you cant trust
the government entirely for making such a bill which does not suit them.

    8. Fine, What will happen when this bill is passed?

A LokPal will be appointed at the centre. He will have an autonomous charge,
say like the Election Commission of India. In each and every state,
Lokayukta will be appointed. The job is to bring all alleged party to trial
in case of corruptions within 1 year. Within 2 years, the guilty will be
punished. Not like, Bofors scam or Bhopal Gas Tragedy case, that has been
going for last 25 years without any result.

    9. Is he alone? Whoelse is there in the fight with Anna Hazare?

Baba Ramdev, Ex. IPS Kiran Bedi, Social Activist Swami Agnivesh, RTI
activist Arvind Kejriwal and many more.

Prominent personalities like Aamir Khan is supporting his cause.

    10. Ok, got it. What can I do?

At least we can spread the message.
