Bangalore, Aug 21: Archbishop of Bangalore Bernard Moras blessed and dedicated a church named after Blessed Pope John Paul II at Chanasandra, Tambuchetty Palya, in the outskirts of Bangalore on Saturday.

The beautifully built and tastefully decorated church happens to be the first and only one dedicated in the name of Pope John Paul, who was declared Blessed this year. Incidentally, declaring a person as Blessed is the first major step towards Sainthood.

Archbishop Moras, who had the rare honour of becoming the Bishop during the tenure of Pope John Paul, hoisted the flag, unveiled a plaque and cut the ribbon to mark the opening of the church to the faithful.

He led the large congregation of faithful in prayers before entering the church along with 50 plus priests. He conducted an elaborate ceremony including sprinkling of holy water in the entire church and on the faithful, burning of incense on the altar and all over the church, consecration of the altar with holy oil to mark the dedication.

In his sermon during a concelebrated Mass, the Archbishop took the faithful through Pope John Paul’s life from childhood till beatification. ''He was a man of prayer, loved all the bishops, priests and youth," the Archbishop said recalling his meeting the late Pope at least five times.

Pope John Paul was concerned about Indian Church and had personal relationship with each bishop and travelled extensively, the Archbishop said and explained that he was like a father to all and was a man loved by the whole world. He laid great emphasis on vocations, family life and the youth. He believed family is a foundation of the Church. If family is blessed the whole world will be blessed, the Archbishop said explaining the Pope’s teachings.

The Archbishop, who met Pope John Paul II was in 1979, said it was such a memorable occasion that he would never forget it as he had a meal with the Pope sitting at the right close to him. ''I still feel it a great blessing," the Archbishop said pointing out that Pope John Paul became a youth for the sake of the youth. He encouraged them and the youth loved him and paid much attention in shaping the future Universal Church.

''The Pope always stood for building a community of new Church. The faithful are the temple of God and unless Jesus lives in the hearts, how we can keep our hearts clean, quoting the Pope," the Archbishop said and presented an impression of Pope Benedict VI on Pope John Paul II, with whom he had spent over 20 years.

Archbishop Moras said many miracles are taking place with the intercession of the Pope and narrated how a person regained his eyesight and doctors certified that it was due to a miracle. The faithful of Chanasandra in Tambuchetty Palya in the city outskirts are privileged to have a church dedicated to Pope John Paul, the Archbishop said.

A large congregation of nuns and faithful were present at the ceremony, which was attended among others by the local councilor, Basavaraj. Archbishop invited all for a community meal. God’s plan was different and the heavy pouring rain soon after the Mass marred the fellowship meal. It was considered a continuous blessing.

The Vicar General of Bangalore Archdiocese Msgr S Jayanathan read out a formal decree to announce the appointment of Fr Alphonse Bhaskara as the first parish priest of the new church.

Dear All at Pope John Paul II Church, Congratulations. May our Pope Blessed John Paul II bless all of us and especially our Archdiocese. Indeed I wanted to share a small testimony. During my crisis at work place, suddenly I remembered of the Book Mark Bl. John Paul II, presented to all present at the Cathedral during the ordination ceremony. At that point of time I, day after day continued to say this prayer, and found great transformation at work place and achieved peace at home and at work place. Bl. John Paul II is truly interceding for us along with Mother Mary. Now, without reciting the prayer of Bl. John Paul II, I don't even start of desktop at work place. Any time he is great and has bestowed upon me the blessings especially for peace. The Prayer:
Blessed John Paul II, from the window of heaven give us you benediction! Bless the Church, that you loved, served and driven, pushing her courageously on the streets of the world to bring Jesus to all and all to Jesus. Bless the young people, who have been your passion, Return them to dream, retun them to look up to the light that lights up the pathways of life here on earth. Bless the families, bless every family! You have experienced the assault of Satan, against the precious and essential spark of Heaven, which God has lighted on the ground. John Paul, with your prayer protect the family! Blessed John Paul, from the window of Heave get down on all of us the benediction of God. Amen.
Bl. John Paul - pray for us.

On January 1, 2000, the reporter
    of "The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk)"
asked DR. BILLY GRAHAM who would
you choose as one of the greatest
    people of the twentieth century?

The answer was " POPE JOHN PAUL II.
I admire his courage, determination, intellectual abilities and his understanding of
    CATHOLIC, PROTESTANT and ORTHODOX
difference, and the attempt at some form of reconciliation".
POPE JOHN PAUL II has contributed
    very greatly to re-write the
    political history of Europe, also
    in breaking the artificial wall
    of separation among the Christians
all over the world. May GOD shower
    HIS special blessings upon this
CHURCH to carry on the commission
that GREAT PERSON of history has
taught us to do in breaking the walls of separation and to fight
for human liberty and dignity at any cost.

Our Archbishop Bernard Moras has indeed done a wonderful job in dedicating a Church in honour and in the name of Pope John Paul II. Historically this church was not built by the Archdiocese of Bangalore but by some other prelate of christian denomination.

It was good strategy on the part of Archbishop Moras to acquire it and renovate it for worship by The Catholic community. Indeed it seems a beautiful edifice deserving to be named after Blessed Pope Paul II. This saintly Pope has done a lot for bridging the gap between The Catholic Church and other christian churches. That apart he has enhanced relationship with various other religions. Pope John Paul II made his historic visit to Mangalore in 1986 to he delight of the the then Bishop Basil D'Souza and this being the very first visit of a Pope to The Port City of Mangalore - indeed the event has gone down in history.

Obviously Archbishop Bernard has taken a lot of trouble to ensure that a monument is dedicated to him and information reveals that he has specially ordered a life size bronze statue of this great Pope. As announced by Archbishop Moras, miracles are reported in The Archdiocese of Bangalore and we await the day when we would find a saint in Pope John Paul II.

I join scores of people in saying kudos to Archbishop Moras on his initiative in naming The Church in his jurisdiction after this great person who we already considered a SAINT.

Archibishop Bernard Moras has done a great job, dedicating a church in the name of late Pope John Paul II, a great Pope indeed, who was instrumental in demolishing the communist regime in Russia and Poland and also played a great role in re-unification of Eastern and Western Germany. He was a Pope of masses and met all types of people across the Globe. Long live Pope John Paul II and congrats to Archbishop Bernar Moras. Fr. Rudolf V. D'Souza OCD.
