Kasargod, Aug 23: The policemen have arrested five persons who were trying to sell snake venom, and confiscated venom approximately valued at one crore rupees from their possession. Two out of them are said to be the natives of the district.

K H Jaffer (38) from Kanhirapoyil House in Kanhangad Balla Kadappura, Rajesh (24), from Nileshshwar Chatamatt Edakkekara House, Abdul Nasser from Paiyil House, Syed Mohammed Rashid (42) from Kannur Kakkatt, and Sarfuddin (37) from Trissur Chavakkad, were arrested by the policemen.

A team of plains-clothed policemen led by Kannur deputy superintendent of police, K V Santosh, posing as intending buyers, approached a lodge near Munishwar Koil in Kannur, and seized a litre of venom, valued at one crore rupees. This operation was conducted on Monday August 22.

It is learnt that after discussions with the policemen who initially pretended to be interested in buying the venom, the gang agreed to sell it for Rs 85 lac. As demanded, the accused handed over five ml of venom to the policemen for testing its authenticity. After conducting chemical tests, the policemen found that the venom was genuine. The police party immediately raided the said lodge, confiscated snake venom, and arrested two persons. Three more were taken into custody from a car parked in front of the lodge.

Dear Mark, possesion or extraction of snake venom with permission is an offence under the Wild Life Act. It is very precious and scarce commodity and is used to prepare anti-venom injections and other life saving drugs. There are some people who could use it as a drug. God knows how many snakes these guys might have killed to gather so much of venom. But, I have serious doubts of it being pure snake venom ,rather an imitation substitute considering the quantity of 1ltr!!

One litre of venom can help in making so much of antivenom to safe peoples life from snake bite. In order to collect one litre of venom, just imagine how many snakes were caught and for milking the venom. These guys must have put all their hardships to collect it and at the end they get trapped into the hands of the cops. Is it a crime to sell venom ?? or does there any law exists that one should not sell venom ?? Have these guys killed these reptiles is also a big question in the line !!

Is there a law for this? Have they killed anyone or created any loss to any exchequers?

For that matter there isn't any law for prostitution. I guess, police didn't get their share. Therefore, this "halla-gulla"...

This venom should be used to inject those corrupt leaders, bureaucrats. They should start from the police department itself.
