Committed to developing civil n-energy: PM


New Delhi, Aug 24 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday assured the Lok Sabha the government was "committed" to the development of civil nuclear energy and said there "would be no compromise on safety of power plants".

Replying to Shiv Sena MP Anant Geete's query on the potential terrorist threat to the west coast in general and to the upcoming nuclear power plant in Jaitapur in Maharashtra, Manmohan Singh said: "We are committed to developing civil nuclear energy."

Stating that "there would be no compromise on the safety of civil nuclear power plants", the prime minister added that safety standards at Jaitapur would conform to the best parameters in the world.

Referring to terrorist threats, he called for a "holistic approach" to countering them, adding: "We cannot put a stop to our economic progress and development due to (such) threat. All security precautions will be taken there."
