Mangaluru: Car mows down 23-yr-old woman pedestrian on footpath, 4 others hurt; driver surrenders

Mangaluru, Oct 18: A 23-year-old woman was mowed down by a car on Wednesday, October 18, in the afternoon while she was walking on the footpath with four other women near the Corporation swimming pool towards Ladyhill.

The deceased is identified as Roopashri, a resident of Surathkal and daughter of Gangadhar.

The accused driver is Kamalesh Baldev (57), a resident of Alake and a commission agent in real estate business.

The Mangaluru West traffic police have registered a case against the car driver Kamalesh Baldev who was coming from Mannagudda Junction towards Ladyhill.

The driver drove the car on the footpath into the five pedestrians including the deceased Roopashri.

The injured four of them are identified as Hithanvi (16), daughter of Mahadeva Kulal, second PU, Govinda Das College; Krithika (16), daughter of Yashwanth, first PU, Kateel PU College; Yaathika (12), daughter of Yashwanth, seventh standard, Holy Spirit School, Mukka and Swathi (26), daughter of Narayana,Hosabettu.

All of them were admitted to a hospital and later, reportedly discharged .

After Kamalesh Baldev, the driver ran into the five young women, he fled from the spot of the accident in his car and parked the vehicle in front of the Honda showroom before heading home.

Subsequently, Kamalesh Baldev returned to the Mangaluru west police station along with his father H M Baldev and surrendered to the police.

    Do you think what you say is abiding law of the state/ country. Instead we should wish that the rules of law be so stringent that people should be think hundred times before driving recklessly. A rigorous punishment like bailess jail term, hefty blood money paid to the victims and permanent ban on license or a huge amount to be paid to regain the license. Moreover the respective city corporation and the state road authorities should also provide good maintenance on roads, speeding limit to be set and cameras to be installed with an substantial amounted fines, CCTV's to be installed to pull violators on roads and signals. Today a family has lost their young daughter and others are injured. This has happened many times and will continue if it is not taken seriously.

    It's easy to criticize a common man. Yes I will stand for that what I have mentioned will you stand with me. Just think on what I have mentioned and if that happens even your family and my family will also be safe. These rules has to come for all those who are walking on pedestrian footpaths and also those who riding on roads.     Am so surprised to read Mr Dylan's comments. Mangalore is becoming a smart city and no doubt about it. If people can't differntiate between pedestrian walking and the actual roads, they should not drive on the road. Should the corporation had to build the side walk in middle of the road? Here corporation is not at fault. Either drinking and driving or driving without license.

    I think it is driven by a minor and not Kamlesh. Why Kamlesh should surrender to police with his father ( may be in 90s). Proper investigation and CCTV footage can unfold the facts. Condolences to the family of late Roopashri and wish speedy recovery to the injured.

    There must be barriers for safety .Foot paths must be having rails all over .Car are moving objects ,if any driver suffers heart failure the car will run over anywhere ..Even pedals can get stuck in the foot carpet ,many reasons are possible for this kind of mishap .so engineers must design these pedestrian walk way sash safe as possible. Funds are unlimited so it is engineering failure in this case we’re foot path is almost inline with road level .

Only way to find out the truth is to ask this guy what happened and the police need to corroborate, investigate and cross question him. Then Only we will find out the truth. Everything is in our incompetent polices hands, and that is what scares me.

    This driver must have been on his mobile, i see so many young drivers watching something on mobile and driving, every day, lots of them...feel like stopping them and give a piece of my mind...but i am not keen to get bashed by them at this age as i see them not having any ethics or concern for others life, most of them behave rashly when i confronted them a few times...only u try to be careful all the times, god shud have given two eyes on the back of the head.

    This death is caused because we have unscientifically designed roads in our so called smart city. The footpath is not legal it is of the same height of the carriageway. Pedestrians are not safe on the Mangalore footpaths. One big reason reason is the builders lobby and private bus mafia. The main culprit is the corporation.

    With all due respect Mr.Dylan. This was completely the drive being at fault. Especially the road and footpath where this happened. It is a wide road and footpath as well is quite decent here. Yes, the corporation may not have done a fair job overall in the city, but this accident is only and only driver's fault.

    To shield myself from reckless motorists, I typically walk on the opposite side of the sidewalk. This way, I can observe oncoming traffic and enhance my safety. However, Indian drivers are notorious. It's possible that this individual was intoxicated. He should be held in custody and only released after providing compensation to the family of the deceased. Swift court decisions are essential in cases like this

    I also do the same walk on the right side so that incomingtrafficis seen.. Also 1.According to Indian Road Congress the height of the footpath should be 150mm or 6 inches and the edges should be sharp, so that vehicles do not easily climb over it. 2 There is a speed limit for city driving which should be strictly implemented, speed breakers shouldbe put on roads where fast drivingis seen.. 3 Unauthorized agents should not be allowed in the RTO compound. 4 Parking is not allowed on footpath ( all footpaths include those that are not paved) ,this should be strictly implemented.

    I agree. I'll be frank here. This city is building name for it's decoration purposes and have been now termed as 'Smart City' which we really don't care/pave for. We want a safer city in terms of roads as the priority, since 60% of Manglorean roads are like moon's surface. This is not acceptable. The corporation here has the most clueless people. I'll pray that this city officials protects it's citizens by implementing GOOD DEEDS for once atleast. But no, Everything happens around the election or else how will they gain our trust for a vote. Right? There should be a way where we as citizens confront the corporation with all the necessary implementations to be made for the betterment of our society and they considering it crucially. I might get hatred comments for this, but come on, this is a fact since recent years. For ex:- Nantoor Accidents where many lost their lives. Tragic !!!
