Mahisha Dasara celebrations: Prohibitory order imposed in Chikkamagaluru dist for 6 days

Bengaluru, Oct 18 (IANS): Considering stiff opposition to celebration of Mahisha Dasara during Nav Rathri festival in Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka, the District Commissioner Meena Nagaraj on Wednesday imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 in the district for six days as a precautionary measure.

The preparations are made to celebrate the Mahisha Dasara in Chikkamagaluru on October 20 by Dalit and progressive organisations. Controversial thinker Prof K.S. Bhagavan is being invited as the chief guest. Earlier, Mysuru district administration had also clamped prohibitory orders during the Mahisha Dasara celebration. The administration refused to permit celebration atop the Chamundi Hill. However, Mahisha Dasara was celebrated at the Town Hall under heavy police cover.

The BJP and right wing organisations are opposing celebration, saying that the Mahisha was a “demon” killed by goddess Chamundeshwari. The celebration of Mahisha Dasara is against Hindu sentiments, they maintain. However, progressive thinkers claim that the Mahisha was a Buddhist king who won the hearts of the people and he is being projected as a “demon” by the vested interests.

Prof Bhagavan has also issued a series of controversial statements at Mahisha Dasara celebrations in Mysuru. State-wide protests broke out condemning his objectionable statements regarding the Vokkaliga community. Quoting Rastra Kavi Kuvempu, Bhagvan had said that the Vokkaliga community had become fools and slaves to Brahmins. He had given a call for the people to shun Hindu religion and embrace Buddhism.

Chikkamagaluru was a strong bastion of BJP until previous assembly elections after Congress managed to win all assembly seats of the district. However, the Hindutva organisations are still active and considering the threat to the law and order system, the district administration has imposed prohibitory orders.

(IANS): India ranks 64th among the 108 countries for remote work -- 15 places lower compared to last year -- primarily because of its poor digital and physical infrastructure and social safety, a report showed on Oct 18, 2023 However to many of our fanatic politicians, such issues and concerns are immaterial. They only want to arose emotional issues and exploit the situation and create law and order problem and engage Govt machinery to such issues. They hijack real issues! Unless people/ voters realize who is fit to be true leader, raising our concerns and trying to resolve them, we are sure to go backwards like many nations have already gone and then blame others for that!

Hindus are unsafe, said VHP leader Togadia and some others. He may be right, but in a wrong way. He means to say that Hindus are unsafe due to Muslims and Christians. But, looking at the things within them, we find there is no unanimity among Hindus as a whole. One section of Hindus say Mahesha was a good King, but Brahmins say opposite. Some Hindus, specially DMK worship Ravana, but Brahmins oppose that, Some people say Sanatana dharma has given lot of pain to low and marginalised Hindus, which higher caste people oppose. Leader of the 18 crore tribals in India said openly on television that they are not Hindus and they do not believe in 330 million Hindu Gods, but they believe one God and worship the nature as the gift of God to mankind. As a Christian, I am not taking any side, but writing what I have read and heard, as an impartial citizen.
