Mangaluru: Increase in gold smuggling - Custom officials beef up monitoring in sea

Mangaluru, Oct 20: Customs officials who are keeping vigil at the international airport in the city have increased surveillance in sea also in the wake of increases cases of gold smuggling into the city from gulf countries.

Additional boats are pressed into service to monitor the sea route from Mangaluru to Karwar from the past few days to prevent smuggling through sea route.

Indian Navy, Coast Guards and Coastal Guard police are working in tandem. In addition, the custom department is also patrolling 24x7.

In the last two months, more than Rs 2.5 crore worth gold is confiscated in international airport in the city from passengers who landed from flights arrived from Dubai.

Mangaluru Customs DC Dr Mitosh Raghavan said that the monitoring in sea is increased. However, he denied to give any more details.
