Mangaluru Oct 26: Consultant urosurgeon and HOD urology department Wenlock Hospital, Dr Sadananda Poojary inaugurated an awareness programme on organ donation at Indiana Hospital & Heart Institute here on Thursday October 26.
It may be recalled, Indiana Hospital & Heart Institute performed its last cadaveric organ donation and transportation of live organs in 2019. Also for the first time in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, Indiana Hospital & Heart Institute has successfully performed kidney transplant for an international patient.
Dr Sadananda Poojary said, “We need to pledge to donate organs and more people should come forward to do so for which awareness is a must.”
Managing director Dr Yusuf Kumble said, “Organ donation enables the recipient to get a second lease of life while it immortalizes the donors’ act of exemplary humanism. This initiative of an awareness day is aimed at educating and inspiring the public on the significance of organ donation in saving and enhancing the quality of lives. There is need to have a uniform law in the country to promote transplant programme and at the same time we need to educate the general public, hospital staffs and make a serious effort to educate the patients.”
Meanwhile, a family member of the late Yashraj, Vanaja was felicitated for donating organs after Yashraj’s tragic death in an accident in 2022. Even Laveena and Padma from Jeevasarthakate were felicitated. After the formal function, students performed dance and also a mime show to create awareness on organ donation.
