Kundapur: Lightning strikes youth speaking over mobile phone, dies

Kundapur, Oct 30: A youth died as lightning struck him as he was speaking on his mobile phone at Kiradi near Avarse on Sunday October 29 night.

The deceased is identified as Pramod Shetty (24), son of Babanna Shetty and Baby Shedti, residents of Kiradi Hanchinamane.

Pramod was speaking to someone on his mobile phone in the open verandah of the house when it was raining. Suddenly, lightning struck him and he got seriously injured. As he was being rushed to private hospital at Brahmavar, he succumbed.

Pramod is from a financially poor family. He was working in a cloth shop at Brahmavar after completion of his education. He was gentle in nature and was a very good volleyball player. He is survived by parents and two brothers.

    How about having someone with a tech background explain what causes lightning to strike one mobile phone in a specific area while others may also be in use at the same time in that area.

    There is no connection between Mobile Phone and Lightning strike. Lightning risk assessment is done as per IEC standards IEC 62405 PART 1 , 2 AND 3. This is just a coincidence thats it. If he was connected to main supply then its a different story altogather. There are lightning current which travel from grid lines to the house hold items this is termed as indirect strike. If the Lightning strikes directly to the house then its called a direct strike. Generally the Lightning currents range from 10,000Amps to 100,000 Amps...its dangerous

    Sunil d souza Mangalore ,with your theory here ,lightning and mobile no connection etc somehow proved directly wrong.Everyone knows mobile during lightning should be switched off since it draws lightning faster than one know.He must have standing with bare foot.Lets close here .Sad for some people mobile is above all dangers.When lightning happens always switch off mobile .It has taken many lives.May his soul rest in peace.Heartfelt sympathy to his family.
