Rajiv Gandhi Assassination: Three to be Hanged on Sep 9

Rajiv Gandhi Assassination: Three to be Hanged on Sep 9

Chennai, Aug 26 (IANS): The three men facing death penalty for the 1991 assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi will be hanged Sep 9 in Tamil Nadu's Vellore prison, a jail official said Friday.

Prison Superintendent R. Arivudainambi Friday afternoon received the official communication to carry out the execution of Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan.

"We have informed the convicts about the date of hanging. The execution will be (carried out) Sep 9 early morning," Arivudainambi told IANS.

He said the movement of the convicts inside the prison will be restricted from now on.

"If they want any books from the library, they will be provided inside their cells but they won't be allowed to visit the library," he said.

Family members will still be allowed to meet them, he added.

On Aug 11, President Pratibha Patil rejected the mercy petition of the three men who were linked to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), which ordered Gandhi's killing.

A woman suicide bomber blew up Gandhi, who was prime minister of India from 1984 to 1989, at an election rally in Sriperumbudur near Chennai May 21, 1991.

In 1998, all 26 accused in the case - including the three - were sentenced to die by a special trial court.

In 1999, the Supreme Court confirmed the death sentences of four: Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan and Nalini, an Indian woman who had assisted the killer squad.

The capital punishment of the others was reduced to varying terms of imprisonment.

The death sentence of Nalini, who married Murugan and became a mother in prison, was commuted to life imprisonment after her mercy petition was accepted.

The petition had the recommendation of Sonia Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi's widow.

Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan and the others were charged with criminal conspiracy that led to Gandhi's killing. They then petitioned the Indian president.

Meanwhile, more and more people in Tamil Nadu are demanding that the three should not be hanged.

PMK founder S. Ramadoss urged Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa to save the three from the gallows.

MDMK general secretary Vaiko has made a similar appeal to Jayalalithaa.

On Friday, Puthiya Tamizhagam leader K. Krishnasamy walked out of the state assembly after the speaker did not allow him to raise the issue.

After languishing in jail for more than 20 years I feel it is very much inhumane to execute the three convicts. Also their direct involvement in the assassination is still lacking clear evidence. We can hope that the efforts put in by human right activists, judicial experts, and other prominent personalities, will be able to stop this inhuman and degrading punishment.

Mr. Kurt, I do not mean to be curt but I am sorry I cannot concur with your point of view. What is good for Europe is not necessarily good for us. We have seen enough bloodshed in the recent past due to reign of terror unleashed upon the innocent people from all walks of life. Not so long ago innocent people on a flight faced a nightmare at Khandahar, the entire world helplessly witnessed on 26/11 the tirade unleashed upon the people who meant no harm to anyone, and deep down there were several atrocities on people either travelling by train, women and children at market place, and even our parliamentarians were not spared.

We do not have such technology to deter or pick out the fugitive at large from an obscure place in an alien land as the advanced nations have, as you know people who have abolished death penalty call us TCNs or Underdeveloped, so until such time when we come in par with the developed nations, we may do well to carry on with our present system where “cutions” are concerned, we do like to see lives cut short at their prime notwithstanding our late prime minister. By the way what if your own “German Border Meinhof Gang” were to let loose their wrath around your place and exterminate quite a sizable population, what would someone in your neighbourhood say – imprison them or hang them? I feel death sentence is more effective than life sentence.

It is a tragedy in India. The process of law is very slow. Steps are Promisd to be teken to speedy justice but with old heads holding high offices this cnnot be . There for demand that election law must be amended so that retired persons and of age 60 for M,P,MLAs be allowed from contesting elections and Only presidential candidates between 65-70 years.

Other leaders may be accomodated by parties in their party offices and healthy and well qualified as Governors, Ambassadors etc. The efficienct of governance will improve.Justice will be administerd with reasonable time frame as per law.

Sensible comments. I request those people who are against the death penalty, to go and ask those people who lost their loved one in terrorist attacks, ask those sisters, mothers who are the victims of rapes..definitely they suggest death penalty. We have not gone through these stages so obviously we have no pain.

are the Indian laws meant only for the politicians ? Sorry Mr.Kurt Waschnig though I mostly agree with your comments, I beg to differ with this comment. what about comman man killed in terrorist attacks. the rapists, murderors, who kill innocents especially small children who are weak and cannot fight back are raped, killed, sacrificed, used in begging child labour. the children cannot fight back hence most of the crimes are commited against them. I feel sorry for our constituion which does not deal with such criminals with death penalty. we are fed up of reading the crimes against children in the newspaper can the Govt do away these criminals and clean the society. If it does so, people will think thousand times before comitting such harsh crimes against innocents especially children.

    Dear All,

It is right to punish a person who killed someone. In this case because they killed the PM of India they are going to be hanged. Everyday there are so many murders in the country. The murderer will be arusted and within no time he will come out and do many more murders again they will be cought and again they will come out. But they will not be hanged.

My point is if the capital punishment to PM's muderer, then it should be to all those who muder an ordinary citizen. There shouldnot be any parciality in punishment.

Hope you all will agree with me.

Rejecting mercy pleas from three men convicted of the 1991 assassination of then prime minister Rajiv Gandhi by the President of India must be strongly condemned.
India is called the "biggest democracy" on earth and up to now India has stable and working democratic institutions.

A democracy shall not carry out excecutions.

The death penalty should not have any place in a civilised country and the history of the death penalty has shown that it does not work as a deterrent.

The last ution carried out in India was in 2004.

Hanging people is gruesome and a crime against dignity and humanity and Kirity Roy is right: " "It has been well established that capital punishment does not help to reform society."

Especially Christians shall fight peacefully against the death penalty. No society and institution has the right to sentence others to death and to carry out utions.

Nations who call themselves civilised, democratic and liberal shall apply the criminal law and sentence criminals who commit severe crimes like murder etc to a lifelong imprisonment but the death sentence should be avoided.

I feel glad that the death sentence does not exist within the European Union any longer.

We as European shall be proud to live in democractic and liberal and secular societies with independent judiciaries and a criminal law that does not contain the death penalty.

I hope that India will abolish the death penalty only then it can fulfil its obligations to international norms.

The world needs an India without corruption and without the death penalty.

    Best regards
