Kiran Bedi Criticised for ‘Vulgar’ Performance at Ramlila

New Delhi, Aug 26: Key member of Anna Hazare-led civil society, Kiran Bedi, a 1972 batch retired IPS officer and PhD holder, considered India's first and highest ranking woman police officer, is in the centre of a storm for enacting and flaying a member of parliament at Ramlila Maidan on Friday August 26.

The one-time, bold and daring police officer Kiran Bedi is under criticism for 'insulting' elected representatives on the stage at Ramlila Ground where Anna Hazare has been on a fast for the last eleven days for a strong Lokpal Bill.

A member of parliament who visited Ramlila was taken to task by Kiran Bedi who was addressing the protestors.

She spontaneously asked the crowd "Ask him (member of parliament who was present there), what is he going to do? They always 'double talk', and say one thing inside the parliament and another outside."

Further she said "These MPs wear a mask!"

Then Bedi, to the great amusement of the crowd, proceeded to pull a scarf from the neck of a young activist on stage, wrapped her head with it like a 'ghunghat' (veil) and proceeded to mock MPs and their "double-faced utterances".

With the scarf covering her face, she lifted it now and then to show how MPs wear masks of different types, and look in different directions with each mask.

Reactions

Kiran Bedi's behavior has shocked many, especially political experts and senior leaders.

Chandan Mitra, BJP spokesperson and journalist said that he never expected such remarks from such a high-ranking former police officer.

Somanath Chatterjee, former speaker of Lok Sabha and former communist party leader said that it was not right on the part of a responsible citizen like her to insult politicians in that way.

Even those who had been watching her 'drama' from the audience could not hold back their disspointment.

"I am shocked at Kiran Bedi's behaviour. When Anna has always called for a peaceful and dignified protest, how can Kiran Bedi, an IPS officer and a responsible former police officer insult an elected representative in public? This is nothing but vulgar." said a social activist and supporter of Anna.

Soon after the incident, some politicians passed remarks on a television channel that she should apologise to the MP as she had no right to make mockery of an elected representative in public. Just because people support Anna Hazare's anti-corruption movement, it does not mean she has the liberty to resort to 'vulgur' acts on the stage, they said.

It may be recalled that, Kiran Bedi, a leading light of Team Anna and known as a no-nonsense and upright officer, had been miffed at not being made Delhi Police commissioner.

Mr. NEIL SEQUEIRA......you are absolutely right. Mrs. Bedi didnt tell anything wrong. In which tongue these politicians or some other people commented here blame Bedi. Everybody should know that from 60 years these politicians didnt bring the lokpal bill. After somuch pressure from the people now this has been done, otherwise still these politicians would have thought we are idiots. The way people in the power played the dirty game till the last moment definitely made Mrs. Bedi & citizens angry and on desperation she acted like that.
Once again i would like to tell that our people who are in the power are deserved this.

When BJP MPs, Gopinath Munde and Ananth Kumar, arrived at the Ramlila ground Kiran Bedi pointed finger at them and said “These MPs don’t want the Janlokpal bill to be passed ………… these people are real chors…”. A prominent news paper from Mumbai has commented “During the 12 day’s of Anna’s fast Kiran Bedi emerged as the most immature, unruly and completely out-of-control side of the band of Anna supporters. Her statements and antics deteriorated from steadfastness to juvenility. In the end, when Team Anna was in final talks with the Govt, Bedi was reduced to donning the mantle of entertainment-in-cjhief. From heckling politicians to putting up impromptu skits to dancing with national flag, she did it all. By the end, the 62-year-old seemed more like a leader of a natak mandali playing her part”. I fully agree to this.

Dr.Kiran bedi has done a lot for the movement with ANNAJI, but on the Ramaleela grounds her enactment was uncalled for. Great leaders seldome do such things even under great emotions. She has been burning with, perhaps animosity and released a bit.

A great Police officer who had resigned must be squareing off her grievances on the occasion. did she not take bribe when she was holding office? The movement of 13 days fast is a guiding point for the youth, how to protest, peacefully and non violent way, in which this small piece to be erazed out. It is a black spot in my opinion.
Now forget about it and concentrate on supporting the movement by resolving not to give bribe any where any time. That is the way we can strengthen the movement against checkng corruption.

There was no vulgarity in Kiran Bedi's behaviour. She mocked how the corrupt politicians are behaving in their hide n seek act.
Now, referring Singapore to India is utter nonsense. In Singapore, first of all see the cleanliness of the roads, pathways, public places etc. They do not even let a single leaf of tree fall on the road. Moment they see any kind of trash it is quickly removed. Also they have imposed fine on all the public and tourists who visit the country for smoking, spitting etc.
First India has to learn a great lesson from Singapore regarding cleanliness, educate the citizens about cleanliness rather than comparing them to corruption.

What a rediculous comments by our elected members. Every indian watched live how these people made mockery of us till last momnet yesterday though they know that Anna is fasting from 12 days. They were sleeping first few days and suddenly got up and started playing with the situation. These elected members whould understnd that first they should behave like gentlemen and then can show the fingure at us. Agreed,in a democratic system it's always the fault of voters to elect(or abstain from voting)wrong people as their netas. But we also have seen umpteen number of 'Messers Clean' turning greedy and selfish moment they grab the power. People always change, but there should be an effective sysem in place to mitigate the consequences of such changes in people and we all hope that the proposed Lokpal bill is such a tool that'll enable to have such a system in place.

From the comments here one can plainly say that we the general public have adapted a herd mentality. Anna is only a mascot and these people who have an axe to grind with the government are using him to garner our herd support to get back at the government. Even a fool can say after the latest events that Kiran Bedi, Kejriwal and Prashant Bhushan have ulterior motives and the Lokpal is only a cover.

It is sad that we the people have fallen hook, line and sinker for these people. If our politicans are donkeys, then who is to blame?. Is it not us who elected them? So easy to sit back in armchairs and criticise politicians when we either sell our votes or abstain from voting. I can bet that every one who has written these comments have indulged in bribing officials at one time or the other to get things done. Why then blame the politicans alone.

I have listened Kiren Bedi's speach and I whole heartedly admire her sence of criticism of our politicians. What she said was 100% true.Only thing is that these remarks may not be digested by our MPs for obvious reasons.
In our country for the first time these is complaint from politicians and feeling unconforatble due to the criticism by Anna team!!!
These politicians are students of the same school and comes together irrespective of party af affiliations whenever thre danger for them relating to corruptive practices. Next, whenever there is an oppertunity to get increased perquisits for their position.
All political parties are struggling to scuttle the Anna anti corruption bill by hook are crook.Whatever they speak is only a lip service.BJP and Congress have a major share in the attempt.Sonia might have closely observing the develeopments and directing her people from USA who did not expected the movement attracting massive support from citizens all over the country.Anna movement has become global one.Long live people's voice.

Kiran Bedi who once termed as CRANE BEDI for lifting the cars belong to family members of MP's and ministers who had parked at no-parking zone on Delhi roads..She had a passed through a painful process of transfers for working as per law. I feel she brought out all her old frustrations at work.
It may be very odd for a IPS officer to talk so insulting but we should know who created this situation today and if the MP’s cannot accept it then they should file a legal case against her.
Gopinath Munde and Ananth Kumar were sitting there and listening to her speech should have walked out .But they did not point out any protest on Kiran Bedi’s insulting speech.
She is no more a government service and they did not treat her like a government officer when she was the first lady IPS officer of India. Today the MP’s and authorities have lost their morals to question Kiran Bedi when she is a oridinary citizen .Kiran Bedi also educated voters to ask for a ‘O’ form that should be available at the voting booth if you do not want to vote to the candidates marked at the ballot list.
If you watch TV and listen to the speech of Film actor Mr.Om Puri then there should be more objections for MP’s and ministers. He even asked to create a entrance test for MLA and MP’s before contesting elections and pass the test at minimum 60 marks. He noted that most of our MP”s are uneducated and also commented on their behavior at the parliament sessions.

KIRAN BEDI DOES NOTHING WRONG. THE ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES ARE ELECTED IN CURRUPT MANNER LIKE DISTRIBUTING SAREE,MONEY AND LIQUOR. THEY CANNOT DESERVE RESPECT AT ALL. THE ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES ARE STAL THE WEALTH OF THIS COUNTRY. THEY ARE LOOTING THIS COUNTRY. THEN WHY SHOULD WE RESPECT THEM? WE SHOULD ONLY RESPECT THEM AFTER THEY ELECTED TO PARLIAMENT IN GOOD MANNER. THEY ASSURE PEOPLE BEFORE ELECTION AND AFTER THAT THEY WILL BETRAY THE PEOPLE. THEY ARE LIER TOO. THEY SPEAK OUTSIDE THE PARLIAMENT WITH ASSURANCES AND ACT AGINST ASSURANCES INSIDE THE PARLIAMENT. AFTER ALL THESE WE HAVE SEEN FOR THE PAST SEVERAL DECADES. SO, THERE IS NO NEED TO RESPECT THEM. ANNA & TEAM WE ARE ALL WITH YOU. AS A RETIRED LADY IPS OFFICER KIRAN BEDI IS DOING A GREAT JOB. WE SHOULD RESPECT HER. JAI HO TEAM ANNA.......

Enough is enough I think all the sansad should be called a nasty name I dont see anything wrong with it. I would be little more agree with Mr. Ompuri's speech, All of them are the same Congress, BJP or UPA. They should be kicked out of Leadership if they can not take criticism, what kind of democracy do we have? I would open my mouth and scream what ever I want. Now they want to malign the clean image of Kiran Bedi. Remember what she has done is the true face of most of the politicians.
Take for example the fabricated CD case against Bhushans while at the other end they are ready for closed dialogues.
Another example PM says he wants to implement strong anti-corruption law, on the other hand Congress is giving derogatory statements against Team Anna.

While MS. KIRAN BEDI was the prison I.G. of Tihar jail, she did great reforms to give a second life to the socially discarded prisoners.

    If the politicians are expecting
    respect like Mahatma Gandhi or
Mother Teresa got, then they must
behave in real life as totally
    honest people.

She didn't use any vulgur language,
but lectured to the public with an
    actual imitation to make them
    understand the matter better and
    clear. She didn't target any
    particular political party or party
members, but did an open presentation touching all political
    party leaders, which was totally
    fair in its presentation.

As MR. SWARAN has indicated, everybody knows about the great
    performance of footwear ball game
and the million dollar business in corruption. So, the political
saints and the public need to see the real show.

Kiren Bedi is absoulely right. Majority of our elected memebers of Parliament are crooks and double standard. They talk in front one thing and backside, different.

This MP who came alone to the Ram Leela maidan might be to a certain extent, honest. Otherwise he wouldnot have come there alone but woould have come along with their party logo and bunch of followers with security guards.

There is no vulgar at all. This is not at all a mistake and she had conveyed the message in a proper way, the real nature of our politicians.

The mention of Kiran Bedi's being miffed on the grounds of her not being promoted at the bottom of the article is totally unwarranted. Secondly, you cannot take a single remark of a social activist and a handful of MPs as the common opinion of the masses. We are quite acquainted with the theatrics of well known ministers before, which have plunged down to a whole new level. The newspapers should atleast do a reality check on their stories and not merely hunt for headlines.
