Karachi bank looted of Rs.3.8 mn

Islamabad, Aug 27 (IANS) At least seven gunmen stormed into a private bank in Karachi and walked away with Rs.3.8 million in cash in the 10th robbery this year and the fourth within a month in the Pakistani port city, a media report said.

The incident took place in Orangi Town area Friday, officials told Dawn News.

A car carrying seven young men stopped in front of the United Bank Limited (UBL) branch. Witnesses said four men entered the bank and pulled out pistols before their accomplices came in, said Pervez Gujjar, an inspector of the nearby Peerabad police station.

Investigators said Friday's robbery could be linked with one reported last month. On July 29, an equal number of suspects robbed a bank in the city. They used the same make of car, and quite unusually, did not touch the CCTV cameras installed inside the banks, a senior police official said.

Last year, the city witnessed 22 bank heists. Police claimed to have solved 16 cases, arresting more than a dozen suspects.
