New Delhi, Aug 28: After more than 12 days of fast against corruption which ultimately ended in triumph, civil society activist and now the hero of the entire nation finally broke his fast shortly after 10 am at Ramlila Ground here.

A large crowd gathered at the Ramlila to witness the moment, and there's jubilation all round, as Anna broke his fast with coconut water and honey amid a large round of applause and shouts in his support.

"This the victory of the people of India. All the efforts that you have put in in the last 13 days, have born fruit. I would like to thank the media for helping this victory happen. I thank those who continously cared for my health. I want to thank the members of the civil society...It is a victory of every Indian." Anna told his supporters.

He, however added that he had only "suspended" his fast and not ended it, and that his campaign for a strong Lokpal institution would continue till parliament passed the anti-graft bill.

"I have just suspended the fast.. did not end it. The fight will go on till parliament passes the Lokpal bill," he said.

The nation, particularly the government of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, heaved a collective sigh of relief at the resolution of a major national cris as the 74-year-old activist ended his fast at around 10.20 am. He began his fast Aug 16 morning and completed 288 hours of fasting Sunday.

Five-year-old Simran, a Dalit from Sunder Nagri in the capital, and Iqri, a Muslim girl from Turkman Gate, offered the coconut water and honey mixture to him.

As a smiling Anna sipped from a steel glass, people in Ramlila Maidan cheered and hugged each other while some sang "Desh ke pyare Anna Hamare".

Arvind Kejriwal, a key member of Team Anna, thanked each and every person who has been involved in the anti-corruption movement and supported Anna relentlessly. He thanked the NRIs too who showed their support in their own ways in various parts of the world. "We thank all those who have come from across the nation and set up camps here in Ramlila," he said.

He expressed special gratitude to the volunteers who worked day and night and those who were instrumental in spreading Anna's message in every nook and corner of the country.

He also thanked the government, the Oppostion parties and other political parties and the Parliament for agreeing to Anna's demands. He also thanked the Delhi police.

Speaking about the anti-corruption movement, Kejriwal said that for the first time since Independence, a law is taking shape that is truly demanded by the people. Until now, even though people's power is supreme in a democracy, it was the Parliamentarians who used to pass laws without asking people what they wanted. But now, a law that has seen intense debate across the nation is set to be enacted, he said.

He also appealed to the people to not give up the fight against corruption and carry forward the movement with the same spirit till corruption is routed out.

Perhaps taking a cue from Sharad Pawar's jibe in the Parliament on Saturday August 27 that Team Anna had never spoken on leaders like Ambedkar, Kejriwal made a special mention of Ambedkar and said that if the architect of the Constitution had forseen how present-day Parliamentarians had been making use of the Constitution for their own benefit, he might have put some more laws to stop such practices.

After breaking the fast, Anna will be admitted at Medanta Medicity hospital in Gurgaon and will skip Rajghat visit due to health concerns.

Kejriwal announced that on Sunday evening at 6 pm, a celebration will be held at India Gate and asked every one to attend the same.

Dear Willaims and fellow commentators, before you guys of extreme wisdom, I am a humble uneducated boy. Yet I will stick with what I have said. Just to remind you that Raja and Kalmadi were elected by fools like you and me, They did not down from heaven. Dear Nelson I agree to your simple concept to kicking out the politicans. Why don't we get together during election time and do it?. All those 542 guys sitting there were sent by morons like you and me. Why did some able civil society stalwarts lose their deposits during the last elections? Have you made study of this? We simply did not vote for them, and thats why. Is it not so easy to get into a herd mentality and yet lose focus of our own responsibilities?.

A desperate situation gave Germany a Hitler, Russia its communism and Iran a theocratic state. The first two have been liberated. Do you want a similar monster in India? Was the emmergency of 1976 not enough?I as a high school kid particpated in the agitations then. As a college student, I spent time in the villages of Anekal, the slums of Bombay and Chennai during my summer vactions. As a young entrepruner I have first hand knowledge of corruption in the drugs, sales tax and labour departments in my own home town Mangalore. Therefore please spare me your stupid lectures. Once you are able to think rationally , you will understand what I am saying. Until then good luck to you. I too want a corruption free India, but not with these suspect Anna chelas.

I salute Anna for the sheer will power and determination that he had to carry on a fast for 12 days and broke it on the 13th day. Truly one has to be sacrificing, humble and without blemish as he pointed out in his speech after breaking his fast unlike our politicians who are otherwise. This is a beginning and the road ahead is very long where corruption can truly be wiped off from India and from the heart of each individual.

The biggest lesson learned in the whole episode is that Parliament/ ruling party cannot ignore people's expectation/ aspiration. UPA's arrogance represented by Sibal and Maneesh Tewary, BJP's ambiguity etc have been completely back fired. Even so called torch barers of Dalit and Minorities who criticised this movement as upper cast, saffron etc also have been given a fitting response. This was a common man's protest and he won.
No one dreams that corruption will end. But the common man must at least be provided a tool to fight it.

All that the Parliament has said is that Jan Lokpal bill along with the other three versions will be sent to the standing committee. The standing committe will deliberate and come out with its conclusions for the Parliament to discuss and come up with an effective Lokpal bill. The one suggested by Anna team is a monster and we will be building an extra consitutional instution like the Gestapo. The government version is weak and ineffective. There are two other versions, one from Aruna Roy and and from Jayprakash narayan and all these will be taken into account. As I have said before there are enough provisions in our constitution today to put an end to corruption without the Lokpal bill. All that is required is reform and proper implementation. It is the present laws that have put Raja and Kalmadi behind bars. It is the Parliament which has given us the RTI. Tomorrow someone can assemble a lakh of people at Ramlila and hold the government hostage to pass some other bill. The hurriyat leaders can assemble thousands and ask for an independent Kashmir. Therefore what Anna and his chelas have done is totally wrong. The Parliament and our constitution are supreme. If you do not like the present set of politicans please kick them out and elect the ones who you feel are good. These politicans were elected by us and so by poking fun at them you are only poking fun at yourself. Once again Anna is being made a mascot and used by the 3 idiots Kiran Bedi, Kejriwal and Prashant Bhushan

Arvind Kejriwal referred to the girl who offered Coconut water and honey to anna as 'dalit' more than once. As anna's stooges have been rightly accused of being anti-poor and anti-dalit, they seem to have exhibited the symbolic gesture by breaking the fast of anna at the hands of a dalit girl. But arvind's more than once reference to the girl as 'dalit' is insulting and humiliating to the girl.

What would the 5-year old child have felt when she was being referred to as 'dalit' before a crowd of thousands? This has exposed the true anti-poor and anti-dalit hue of anna's stooges. Kejriwal should be prosecuted under s.3(10) of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for his insulting and humiliating mention of the girl as dalit in public view.

It is a historic day, history was written in India again and Anna Hazare and his movement supported by people from all walks of life will be kept in mind of countless Indians and future generations will learn in school about this important phase of India´s democracy.

Legal , peaceful and non violent protests took place all over India.

Especially the last months have shown that India is a stable and efficiently working democracy.

The Statesman, published in Kolkata, reports today:

"Mr Hazare said the current campaign has given him such inspiration that he will not keep quiet till change is brought. He also said he will tour the country to campaign for bringing in “much required” changes.
Against the back of criticism from a section of Dalit leaders that his movement was anti-Constitution, Mr Hazare said the movement was inspired by the Constitution written by BR Ambedkar, whom Dalits consider as their icon. “Through this agitation we have also proved that people's parliament is supreme than the Parliament in Delhi. Ambedkar has inspired us. He enacted the constitution. We have to fight for them,” Mr Hazare said.

It was Indeed the will of Indians expressed by creative protests and the union government had to give in, frankly spoken in order to survive.

And it shows that Gandhi, the Father of the Nation is embedded in the hearts and minds of every Indian.

Anna reminded the nation of Gandhi.
    It´s a wonderful day today.

The citizen of india hence forth must cooperate with a self restraint of not offering bribe and reporting to Lokauktaif the officials demand money for doing any work.

The efforts of Anna and Co will be on the road to full success. let every one, particularly those who gathered at Ramleela grounds and else where showing support must be thoroughin their actions. No one can stop bribery in a country like India! One can easily say stop bribing Govt. officials, but without bribing them we cant get our work done. If we complain to the higher authorities, again bribe them to take action (?), otherwise our complaints will be in the dust bin! This is my personal experience.

Now the people must unite to take back all what is looted from those corrupted politicians. Raja, Kalmadi and Reddy brothers must return all ill gotten wealth belong to the nation. The defense Minister has stalled the much needed infrastructure at our boarers with China, while China has built her ways for a swift mobilization of her troops. The request forwarded in 2010 by the Indian defense forces to expedite similar facilities for a swift move of Indian troops, is stalled citing cost as a reason. It was the same senario, when Indian army submitted a list of much needed armaments to counter the foes of India. Nehru bluntantly rejected it, saying" India is a peaceful country and no need of such weapons". what happend within a few months after the infamous rejection was now a history.India lost two thirds of Kashmir to Pakistan. China inflicted a histrical defeat in 1962. The consequences are due to failure to reckon the unfolding senario by the then leadership. India left with the legacy of insecurity. India, failing to learn from the lessons is yet dilly dallying with security of India. Prepardness is paramount to counter the movement of an unpredictable and larger foe at the boarder. When corrupt politicians loot the country and amass wealth for themselves, how could the defense ministry reject strtageies, to protect India , on the basis of cost. Defense is a costly business. The looted funds must be retrived and used for the purpose, instead of allowing history to repeat.

    There is a bit confussion

    1. Is that Parliment resolved to adopt the 3 pts put forth by Anna Team or whether it is a sense of the House conveyed to the Standing committee for their consideration (or rejection?)

    2. Is Annaji's such dramatic movement can be a dangerous presedent to pressurise the Parliment to maqke laws of ones choice?

    3. Is this proves that Parlimentary democracy has failed and people should stop voting...as it looks all Political parties have come from same school!

    4. Is this event is a initial sign of loosing faith in the Parlimentary system? and is that can lead to some sort of enarchy in future?

I think time alone can prove and disprove things!
