Speaker mulls action against Om Puri, actor sorry

New Delhi, Aug 29 (IANS) Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar said Monday that she was considering a privilege motion against actor Om Puri for his "derogatory and defamatory" remarks against MPs during a rally in Ramlila Maidan last week.

"The matter is under my consideration. I have received notices on the question of privilege," the speaker said in the Lok Sabha as the actor apologised for his comments in which called politicians "uneducated" and "incompetent".

Congress MPs Praveen Singh Aron, Jagdambika Pal, Vinay Pandey, Harsh Vardhan, P.L. Punia and Kamal Kishor, as also Mirza Mehboob Beg (National Conference) and Ramashankar Rajbhar (Bahujan Samaj Party) have given notices against Puri for using "derogatory and defamatory words against members of parliament and also casting reflections on the house".

The Samajwadi Party's Premdas Katheria and Shailendra Kumar have also given notices against the Bollywood actor, known for his roles in films as varied as "Ardh Satya", "West is West" and "Chachi 420".

Puri apologised and said he wasn't drunk as some people had said, just emotionally charged.

"I respect the parliament and the costitutional body. I am very proud to be an Indian. It was wrong on my part to use such terms. I wasn't drunk, I was just emotionally charged, such things do come from mouth.....even our politicians at times, in a fit of anger, use such things," Om told CNN-IBN.

"I would love to be there (in the parliament) to explain my emotions... the forum which leaders like Sardar Patel and Jawaharlal Nehru have been a part of. If they (parliament) are still angry with me I will take whatever punishment they give me," the actor added.

The 60-year-old actor created a stir Friday with his speech attacking politicians. He told the thousands gathered that he feels "ashamed when an IAS or IPS officer salutes a ganwar (illiterate) who is a neta (political leader)".

"Yeh anpadh hain, inka kya background hai? Aadhe se zyaada MP ganwaar hain...," the well known actor said.

Sujan Singh - don't put the parliamentarians next to the GOD, they are our servants. They have to listen to whatever we say with the folded hands. And if they don’t like to do such job then leave politics and work in the fields. We have sent them to sit in Parliament to take proper decisions on our behalf. These so called GODs have to be told by the civil society activists on how to behave in Parliament and what is good for the people. You saw their behaviour in the parliament when the whole world was watching them just imagine what could be happening when generally no one watches LS/RS TV channels. They are not GODs and raise their levels – they can’t demand RESPECT it can only be EARNED and presently they have lost it all.

Om puri is a wellknown and a well educated film personality. He there spoke a common man's feelings. He did not speak anything against the institution of Parliament. He spoke when he was emotionally charged. He has publicly apologized on a TV channel.Issue should end here. Shouldn't our MPs introspect over what AAM AADMI feels about them?

Parliament is a symbol of our freedom, liberty and dignity of our people and country. Whereever there are five people they consist of God and Parliament consists of several gods in that respect. There are individuals with their shortcomings and limitations everywhere but the body as a whole is sancrosanct and sacred. Ompuri should apologize with grace and dignity.

My request to Hon'ble Speaker "Forgive OmPuriji and Forget the Issue". How dare he say that thing. All MPs are 100 % honest and all are highly educated. He(OM Puri) is not literate enough to pass this statement. We are also sorry for his statement

Om puri and Kiran bedi spoke the truth......everybody knows it. it has been more then 60 years since our independence but still majority of indians live below pverty line. where do u think all the money has gone.scams involving huge amounts of money are reported everyday in newspapers which are not possible without the complete consent and involvement of politicians. Politicians need to earn their respect. people have the freedom of expressing their anger verbally atleast. i mean its our tax money......hello......

You say this sentenence when you go in parliament 'respect is earned & not demanded'. Sharad yadav said in the house to kiran bedi 'tu sikhayegi hamein rajneeti'. Ye ek aurat ki insult hai & urge the parliament to move motion against him also.
