100 animals died in Delhi Zoo last year


New Delhi, Aug 29 (IANS) More than 100 animals died in Delhi Zoo last year. In all, nearly 3,000 animals died in zoos across the country in the same period, official figures revealed Monday.

Environment Minister Jayanthi Natarajan informed the Lok Sabha that 109 animals died in the Delhi Zoo in 2010-11.

Further, 2,910 animals died in zoos across the country in the same period. The highest number of deaths was recorded in Gujarat, which stood at 380.

"Most of the death of animals occurred in the zoos in the country are natural or because of old age compounded by various diseases like septicemia, pneumonia," the minister said.

The second highest number of deaths recorded was in Karnataka (354), followed by Maharashtra (242).
