Irom Sharmila's 10-year Fast : Can Media Turn Focus Here?

Daijiworld Media Network

New Delhi, Aug 30: It is a known fact that Civil Society leader and crusader of anti-corruption movement Anna Hazare's 13-day long fast received tremendous coverage from all forms of media nationwide. Not only the nation, but international media too reported extensively on the event.

But ironically enough, the intense media coverage on one fast has exposed its apathy towards another one, a fast much 'stronger' than Anna Hazare's, but which has been ignored by the Indian media as well as social network media. A few months back when Baba Ramdev got similar kind of attention from media, Swamy Nigamanda who had been fasting for more than 100 days to stop illegal mining in Jharkand died. He too failed to get any attention for his cause from the government.

The iconic struggle of Irom Sharmila in Manipur, who has been on a fast for over a decade, without food and water, is in the limelight now, mainly because of media's and also the government's utter sense of indifference.

Sharmila has been demanding that the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) must be repealed and that Manipur should be freed from fear.

Frustrated Manipur activists have strongly criticised the media for neglecting North East India, and not considering it as part of India.

"It's really shameful, when Anna Hazare got 13-day non-stop attention, can't Sharmila deserve even a single day's a attention from the same media?" Mani Thapa, an woman activist questions.

Sharmila's brother said that the indifference by the government, politicians, civil society, and the media and the people was shameful.

"For ten years Irom Sharmila Chanu hasn't eaten a morsel of food, nor taken a drop of water."

She weighs just 37 kgs and most of her body organs are wasted. Her menstrual cycle has stopped. The Indian state has kept her alive on vitamins and nutrients and she is force fed twice a day through her nose.

When Team Anna already backed by thousands asked Sharmila for her support, the Iron lady expressed her solidarity but asked why could she not get the advantage of exercising her non-violent protest for justice as a democratic citizen of a democratic country.

"When Anna started fasting for four days in the month of April, Parliament, intellectual circles, the NGOs and the citizens of India discussed his issue very deeply. We felt we the people from North east are not citizens of India," her brother said.

The AFSPA gives the Army and the paramilitary forces the power to use force, shoot or arrest anyone on a mere suspicion. Sharmila began her fast after an incident in Malom when ten innocent civilians were gunned down by men of the Assam rifles.

"Whether Anna supports her or not, it doesn't matter. If he supports her it's very good as a citizen and as a human being. But at another point if he doesn't support her that is also fine with us. Sharmila will continue her fasting until she gets her demand," her brother said.

Sharmila's simple fast is an epic protest that remains unparalleled in history. But is anyone listening?

On November 2, 2000, in Malom, a town in the Imphal Valley of Manipur, ten civilians were allegedly shot and killed by the Assam Rifles, one of the Indian Paramilitary forces operating in the state, while waiting at a bus stop.[4][5] The incident later came to be known to activists as the "Malom Massacre".[6] The next day's local newspapers published graphic pictures of the dead bodies, including one of a 62-year old woman, Leisangbam Ibetomi, and 18-year old Sinam Chandramani, a 1988 National Child Bravery Award winner.[5]

Sharmila, the 28-year-old daughter of a Grade IV veterinary worker, began to fast in protest of the killings, taking neither food nor water.[7] As her brother Irom Singhajit Singh recalled, "The killings took place on 2 November, 2000. It was a Thursday. Sharmila used to fast on Thursdays since she was a child. That day she was fasting too. She has just continued with her fast". 4th November is also given as the start day of her fast. On the Friday third of November she has a last supper of pastries and sweet things then she touches her mother's feet and asks permission to fulfill her bounden duty. [8] Her primary demand to the Indian government was the repeal of the AFSPA, which allowed soldiers to indefinitely detain any citizen on suspicion of being a rebel.[4] The act has been blamed by opposition and human rights groups for permitting torture, forced disappearances, and extrajudicial utions.[4][7]

Three days after she began her strike, she was arrested by the police and charged with an "attempt to commit suicide", which is unlawful under section 309 of the Indian Penal Code, and was later transferred to judicial custody.[8] Her health deteriorated rapidly, and the police then forcibly had to use nasogastric intubation in order to keep her alive while under arrest.[3] Since then, Irom Sharmila has been regularly released and re-arrested every year since under IPC section 309, a person who "attempts to commit suicide" is punishable "with simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year [or with fine, or with both]".[8][9]

This is the truth that now a days media is commercialized, controlled by big big business people. They care only about their publicity and mirch masala only. They are running away from their responsibility.

If Paramilitary forces are not deployed and not given with empowerment - then Manipur too would go off our control.

Gujarat has given two rulers namely Gandhi and Sardal Patel. One gave us independence and the other unified the whole India by integrating petty pricely states or independent kingdoms.

British in the form of EIC took a single control of entire Indian sub continent and brought all petty kingdomes under one umbrella.
Without having gone through them, we would have been tiny countries such as Bhutan, Myanmar etc., It was a blessing in disguise that Brits were ruling us during the independence revolution throughout the world.

So, I am pretty sure Sharmila's view is humanitarian than national. So is the problem. Take away military forces and lose the land or treat rebels, miscreants, terrorists as human beings.

I doubt Government can do anything here other than allowing her peacefully live without meaning.

Anna Hazare's cause is much different. He is carefully ed as a symbolic figure by Anna team, the social activists, who are working towards wiping out corruption. Hopefully, Indian would revert back to corruption-free administration as was in the British India period.

It is simply unfortunate that corruption budded in the Mysore Presidency during post-independence, while Madras Presidency was still known to be pure and honest like the Lotus.

Very strange and surprising! A lady starving for the past 10 years for a cause, and till date no newspaper or TV channel dared to bring the incident to the notice of the public. It raises doubts as to the extent of freedom the press enjoys in this country. What are our lawmakers doing? Why wasn't such an important issue debated in the parliament? Do they expect the public to come out on the streets for each and every issue?

Itz really a shocking news.A person is dying to make the state free.Whether Govt.knows this or not? It is not only the media and Govt.are indifferent about this thing. In Anna Hazare's case,it was not only Anna Hazare who fought for the corruption, there were lot of Indians who made Anna to shine and made the Govt. and media to think and act sereously about it.

Here, in this particular case, there is lack of unity.People of the state are themselves indifference about this. When someone is not listening or concentrating u, u have to make them listen and concentrate on u.Our Govt. is lazy n sleeping all the times.First, wake it up then do such things.Make the media and Govt.to concentrate on u.It is better to stop her fasting and cure well, so that she can come up with some other ideas. First, let each and every member of the state know the benefits result for which she is fighting.

Media needs to be impartial and mature. It should not seek to highlight only those stories which bring more viewers/readers. Its a national shame that we are not at all affected by the brave-heart Sharmila's story even after her 10 years' fast. Fellow citizens awake!!

I salute Irom Shramila and she is the iron lady of North east.
It is a irony that Home Minister who is a extreme conservative (in a sense he prefers constitutional safeguarding than reaching out to people) and establishment oriented, hardly can make any room to listen to Irom's demands.
Anyway the nation is behind Irom.

It is certain she will get some award when she is 80 or 90 years old.

"Irom Sharmila's 10-year Fast : Can Media Turn Focus Here?" GUYS OUR MEDIA CAN'T FOCUS THIS KIND OF FASTING. NOW A DAYS LOTS OF MEDIA CHANELS ARE COMPETING FOR THEIR TRPS. WHO CARE FOR ALL THESE. WHEN ANNA-TEAM FASTING 13 DAYS THAT IS A BREAKING NEWS EVERYWHERE. DAILY IN OUR COUNTRY LOTS OF POOR PEOPLE ARE DIENG WITHOUT FOOD-WATER, SO WHERE IS OUR MEDIA FOR THIS REAL REPORT. THEY WILL GO ONLY TO COVER POLITICAL NEWS AT TOWNS & CITIES. THERE ARE MANY MORE VILLAGES WHERE MEDIA CAN REACH OUT & SHOW THE REAL HAPPENING OVER THERE. NO PROPER ROADS, SCHOOLS, ELECTRICITY, HOSPITALS, NO DRINKING WATER FACILITY. THESE ARE THE BASIC NEEDS FOR A COMMON-MAN NOW A DAYS. SO PLEASE OUR MEDIA MUST GO AFTER THESE KIND OF SOCIAL NEEDS TO SHOW TO THE GOVT. AND NOT ONLY SATYA-GRAHAS, FASTING FROM SOME SPECIAL TEAM FOR A POLITICAL BENEFITS. JAI-HO-BHARAT

IT IS THE PEOPLE AROUND HER (PEOPLE
OF MANIPUR) TO BE BLAMMED BECUASE MANIPUR BEING A CORNER STATE PEOPLE SHOULD COLLECTIVELY SUPPORT HER ESPECIALLY BOYCOTTING ALL ELECTIONS TO ATTRACT MEDIA ON THIER WAY. FORGET ABOUT CONGRESS PARTY EVEN REGIONAL PARTIES NOT SUPPORTING THE CAUSE OF PEOPLE MEANS IT IS SHAME ON OUR PART AS WE INDIANS / LAW MAKERS NEGLECTED THE TORTURE BY OUR OWN ARMY / PARAMILITARY FORCES WHICH SEEMS TO BE FAR MORE THAN ANY ATTACK BY TERRORISTS / GROUPS.

Logic of human behaviour is pure economics. Everyone is interested in incentives : 'what is in it for me'.
Media will make it their focus if they improve their ratings.
Politicians will work if they can garner votes.
You and me will be interested if its in our interest.
Sharmila's fast may be of interest because of the epic statistics. But the cause she is fighting for.. , Wait I have go back and refer to the article again!
Similary Swami Nigamanda and his quarrying in Ganga did not enthuse the masses.
The main failure for Sharmila as for Swamy was their PR or lack of it.Anna had the best PR team. They sold to our imagination.

Kud0000000s to the Media. The Media get a big Zero. The real Hero is Irom Sharmila not Anna Hazare and the Media as usual where they get the mileage cover the most. Shame on all our Media houses and they pretend to be unbaised and professional. Useless Media Houses in a huge country like India.
