Mangalore, Aug 31: The people of Mangalore are now preparing for ‘Ganesh Chathurthi’ which will be celebrated on Thursday September 1 this year. Artist Balakrishna of Baalu Arts, Thokkottu, is giving final touches to the idols of Lord Ganesh in various styles and postures.

Ganesha idols are made with great devotion, setting aside the profit motive. The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi gives artists an opportunity to exhibit their creativity in the form of these idols.

Some of the famous idol makers of Mangalore are Ravi Bhandary of Car Street and Prabhakar Rao of Mannagudda,. The artists make the idols according to the requirements of customers. Iidol makers also undertake a ‘Vritha’ or vow right from the day they start making the idols to the day the idols are immersed.

People believe that Lord Ganesha visits the houses of all devotees on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi, removes sorrows, and blesses them with happiness, prosperity, and good fortune. People keep sugarcane on either side of their home to welcome Lord Ganesha and prepare a wide variety of delicacies such as ‘laddus’, ‘modak’, and various dishes. People also distribute sweets to neighbors on this day.

The creative hands of the artists have come up with various Ganesha idols with just the final touches pending. The finished work is sure to attract a large number of people.

In Mangalore, areas like Car Street, Gollarakeri, and central market wore a busy look on Tuesday August 30 as people thronged the market to shop for the festival.

Nice pictures. Look at the expression of the monkey. Looks like it is not tied to anything but came there on its own.
