No Comment on Stay of Rajiv Killers' Hanging: Congress

New Delhi, Aug 31 (IANS): The Congress Wednesday refused to comment on the staying of the execution of three convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case and said such issues involve constitutional, legal and administrative processes.

"We have clarified a number of times that the cases of death penalty involve a constitutional process, a legal process and an administrative process.

"It has been going on and will go on. There is no question of commenting," Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi told reporters here.

Asked if the Jammu and Kashmir assembly adopts a resolution for commutation of parliament attack convict Afzal Guru's death sentence as had been done by the Tamil Nadu assembly for convicts in Rajiv Gandhi's assassination, he said the question was hypothetical.

"I have given a clear reply. I will add or subtract nothing," he said.

The Madras High Court Tuesday stayed for eight weeks the hanging of the three convicts sentenced to death for conspiring to assassinate former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. The three were scheduled to be hanged Sep 9.

Hearing the petitions filed by Murugan alias Sriharan, T. Suthendraraja alias Santhan and A.G. Perarivalan alias Arivu that their death sentence be commuted, the high court ordered an interim stay on the hanging pending disposal of the case.

The Tamil Nadu assembly had Tuesday adopted a resolution recommending commutation of their death sentence.
