Kundapur: Newborn dies in govt hospital, hundreds protest alleging negligence

Kundapur, Nov 21: Hundreds of people, along with the parents, who lost their newborn, held protest in front of government hospital of the city on Monday alleging doctor negligence in the death of the newborn during delivery.

Srinivasa Karvi and Jyoti Karvi are the couple who lost their child. Jyoti was eight-and-half-month pregnant and arrived at the hospital for check up on November 16. When asked about scanning, the doctor said that there was no need of any scan. Jyoti returned home and later developed stomach pain. Srinivasa Karvi took Jyoti to the government hospital. It is said that the duty doctor was not available and they did not get Jyoti admitted.

In the morning on November 20, Jyoti had a normal delivery but the doctor said that the baby died immediately after the delivery. When Srinivasa Karvi asked for the reason and the doctor said that the intestine was wound around the neck of the newborn. Hence the public which got enraged, alleged doctor’s negligence and held a protest right from Monday morning.

Tahsildar Shobha arrived at the protest site on Monday evening and assured the protesters that action will be taken. However, the protesters urged the district health officer (DHO) to come to the spot and take action against the erring doctor. The DHO arrived a little later but the protesters said that they will not withdraw the protest until the doctor is suspended.

Byndoor MLA Gururaj Gantihole, who arrived on the protest site supported the protesters. Citizens of Kundapur also stood in support of the protesters. MLA Gururaj Gantihole warned of Kundapur and Gangolli bandh if the doctor is not suspended on Tuesday.

    I read this incident with sadness. Its sad to lose a baby for the mother. The loss is irreparable. Before blaming the Doctor however we must look into many facts. 1) Was there adequate monitoring facility available in Hospital for the fetus? She is patient who conceived after infertility and ideally labor should have been monitored by continuous CTG in labor. Was it available in Hospital? 2) There I believe is shortage of Gynecologists' in govt Hospitals. Every effort must be made to fill vacancies. Because one Gynecologists' cant conduct very high number of deliveries, Its practically impossible. 3) Was there a Pediatrician present in the labor ward at the time of delivery? Ideally a Pediatrician must be present at the time of delivery in all deliveries. Its a unfortunate incident and before blaming the Doctor let there be an enquiry. Government Doctors work with limited facilities and we must not blame them without reason. Its a sad incident and I understand the pain of parents. But let us not blame people with out reason. Because if blame Doctors for every mishap Doctors cant wok with a stable mind . Let us keep clam and I share my pain with the parents who lost their baby

    What?Did I read right?or said wrong?In my whole life in maternity or Gyn Obstr. OT,i didnt hear intestine is around the neck of baby?Or was he a really doctor?OR a internet doctor Certificate?As Rudolf R .said ,he must have simply explained to people who didnt know what is where.Very sorry state of things .Even when it is umbulical cord around the neck of baby ,why didnt they hear the babys heartbeat or check.Quite possible baby was in danger ,but it is their duty first to hear babys heartbeat before proceeding to delivery or give her any tablets to induce labour.Anyway now too late.I only condole the family and pray to God they may be blessed with a healthy baby next time ,now pray babys soul may rest in peace.Please by next time go to a good doctor in city or go to control time to time .Very sad.

    Poor Healthcare System of a Vishwaguru should open up our eyes . This system needs massive investment from Government. Don't know what happened to the scheme of a mutispeciality Government hospitals in each district announced by the government. Also there may be an error in story, probably the umbilical cord (not intestine) wound around the poor child's neck. Deepest Condolences to the family.

    Very tragic! Imho, it could not be the intestines, but the umbilical cord getting wound around the unborn baby's neck, also called "nuchal cord"! It should have been detected in the antenatal USG, and proper precautions taken before and during delivery by an experienced gynecologist, though there could have been unexpected complications as with any other abnormalities; please note this is a very personal opinion with reference to the news report; please do your own research!

    According to our Constitution, an MLA's job is to legislate, that is help in the process of enacting laws. He has no right to interfere in the executive department of governance. Only the health minister has that authority. The MLA can approach the Health Minister and seek redressal of grievances. If the concerned doctor complains to the Speaker of the Assembly regarding the MLA, the Speaker is duty bound to take action against the MLA. Now whether there has been a lapse of duty or negligence on the part of the doctor is quite another matter, for which the peoples' representatives (as normal citizens) have to approach the departmental head or the Minister concerned.

    quite common in third world country...first of all there is no health care as such..doctors nurses and even chaprasis in govt hospitals are heartless. just behind money....in this case now the brashta party mla ganti also entered...so the case will take a different turn...

    Why blame the doctors. Blame the system and resources provided to the hospital. Is the hospital has sufficient doctors to take care of the patience. Is there is sufficient medical Equipements to handle the emergency and complicated patients issues. I do agree, in the hospital, the doctors are not giving 100% attention to the patients. But fault also lies with the hospital management.
