Gadag, Nov 25 (IANS): An elderly woman has been accused of killing her nine-month-old grandson in this Karnataka district, sources said on Saturday.
Nagarathna, the mother of deceased Advik, lodged a complaint with the Gajendragarh police station, alleging that her mother-in-law, Saroja, had killed the baby.
In the complaint, Nagarathna said that she had returned to her in-laws' house five months after the delivery.
But her mother-in-law expressed her displeasure over Saroja embracing motherhood at such an early age.
As per the complainant, the woman did not stop at this and made the infant swallow betel nuts and leaves leading to his death.
The final rites were conducted on November 22.
Based on her complaint, the body was exhumed on November 24, and sent for post-mortem.
Meanwhile, the accused grandmother has refuted her daughter-in-law's charges and pleaded innocence.
Further investigation in the matter is currently underway.

Sun, Nov 26 2023Serious doubts arise about the allegations of the mother of the victim child; why was the complaint lodged so late and why nobody else in the family complained about this suspicious death? IMHO, it appears to be the result of postpartum depression, which the mother of the child was suffering from! This is a very personal opinion based on the news report; please do your own research and analysis before drawing any conclusions!

Sun, Nov 26 2023Very sad.One innocent baby to kill ?I dont think elderly lady killed her baby.More I feel the mother self has done something to the babyAnd put the fault to mother in law.At the most I think since baby got sick mother in law must have given her olden times medicine to child to save?Like Beetle nut juice etc mixe?I am sure mother of the baby is having some Post partum Syndrom ?and killed ?They are doing Postmartum on two days after last rites? Why not on first day itself doubt something faul and examined?Poor babys soul rest in Heaven in peace.Did the father of Baby anything to say?Heartfelt sympathy to him .examin the mother.

Sun, Nov 26 2023Rita; you being an experienced gynecologist nurs, have very rightly pointed the most plausible cause, which is the child's mother suffering from "postpartum depression"! In rural areas of our country all sorts of weird rituals are carried out in the name of some Gods, Goddesses, or spirits; and in the absence of modern scientific pre and post delivery car, such type of incidents frequently occur, but are brushed under the carpet by the villagers because of the immense fear induced in them by local tantriks!!

Sat, Nov 25 2023Hold on sir. Let the cops investigate. Daughter in law and mother in law might have had some other issues. The childs death and the mothers grief might have prompted her todo so as well. In villages and all i dont think elderly people will do something like this to mail heirs
