Sullia, Nov 26: Two arecanut thieves, who arrived in a vehicle to Edapathya farm of Savanoor, swung a sword at the son of the owner as he caught them red handed.
Nishkal Ram, son of Ramachandra Edapathya, owner of Edapathya Farms is the one who was attacked by the thieves. He received injury on his hand and is admitted to a private hospital in Puttur.
Nishkal Ram had arrived from Mysuru on the early morning of Saturday. He saw that the thieves are loading arecanuts from the solar shed of their farm. When he confronted them, the thieves threatened Nishkal and attacked him with a sword. When Nishkal screamed, his family members came to hsi rescue and caught Basheer, one of the thieves while the other managed to escape.
Accused Basheer confessed that he had been stealing arecanut continuously from the past few days and the worth of the booty stolen by him was around Rs 5 lac. He said that he was involved in theft at he behest of Hakeem, another thief who escaped from the spot.
The duo arrived in a car belonging to a man named Irshad. Basheer has been handed over to Bellare police by the farm owner.
