Dubai: Five Indians Still in Jail for 'Anna Protest'

Daijiworld Media Network - Dubai

Dubai, Sep 2: As reported by Daijiworld last week, at least eight Indians were arrested by the Dubai police on August 20 for illegally organising a rally in support of Anna Hazare, who had then been on fast demanding a strong Lokpal bill in India.

Through social networking sites, about 150 Indian citizens working in UAE gathered at Al Mumzar beach for a three kilometer rally in support of Anna Hazare on August 20. Dubai police stopped the march after they proceeded for about 1.5 kilometers and detained the leaders who floated the rally and let the rest go. Police arrested five people and next day three more were taken in.

According to the latest information, three have been let off but five Indian professionals are still in jail, facing prosecution.

A news source said that the five are employees of a private firm. In their early 30s, they hail from Kerala, Maharashtra and Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.

For people of any nationality, organising a rally without the approval of authorities concerned in the UAE is illegal.

The Consul General of India in Dubai Sanjay Verma reportedly told a radio channel  "Our officials have got access to them. Because of Eid holidays in Dubai, things did not move.”

After the Eid holidays, on September 4, Dubai authorities may take a call for bail of these five people.

He adviced all the Indian citizens who reside in the UAE to be cautious and avoid public reactions to issues in India. The local laws must be respected, he said.

These people should not have protested in Dubai if local laws don't permit. After all authorities in Dubai are not responsible for corruption in India.

I really pity on this people who acted with out thinking about their future. I do agree we should have the spirit to fight against corruption but same time we should know where & when we should act. We are all here in the Gulf to survive in life due to heavy corruption & dirty politics in India. We won't get a well paid & suitable job in India that's the reason we all are here. The truth is that few of us are well settled with fair jobs & maximum people are still struggling in the Gulf countries with out having suitable jobs.

People of any nationality, organising a rally without the approval of authorities concerned in the Gulf countries is illegal.

I am working in the Gulf since 1985, visited most of the countries & well aware of the law & order & the condition of Indian people in the Gulf. I am a social worker too & a member of few Indian Associations.

But after reading the silly comments of most of the people over here,I feel so sad & I noticed the people comments without any humanity. It looks like they never commited any mistakes in their life time. Instead of teasing & hurting the people who commited mistakes,if you can't help them atleast pray for them to come out from the jail. God will bless you. After all they are also our brothers from India.
Do you people know,if any Gulf citizens comes under your vehicle & in accident with your vehicle by their own mistakes & dies, you will have to face capital funishment. So,what you say about this. You will tease yourself ?

I hope this incident will teach other Indians who want to show their stupidness in a foreign land. Dubai is not India where people call for strike as and when they wish. The UAE Government did not even spare Pakistanis who agitated against the Indian Government when Babri Masjid was demolished by Hindu fundamentalists. They deported hundreds of them to their country and did not even listen to the pleas of the Pak Government. Well done Dubai, let them languish in the jail for sometime before deporting them to India.

It is sad to hear that because of few stupid people we, others suffer here. The arrested may be released but the consequences of their stupidity will not be removed from the minds of the local Authority. One such incident is few months back someone organised one such rally and the result was the ban of using sound systems in any of the outdoor parties in any parks in Dubai. And now because of this incident, for sure Indians will further lose their respect, general public may not be allowed to do gatherings in large numbers, maybe Indians in Dubai may not be allowed to meet in large number during any incident back in India etc.

So Brothers and Sisters, please do not try to be smart, there are plenty ways to show your support and few such are sending petition signed by all directly to the Indian Ministry, organising rally within the Embassy compound, having a protest within your residence or in a small hall.

Remember: Successful leaders know how to define their mission, convey it and ensure they and their followers are protected.

    Best regards,
    Rakesk

I recommend either Anna or Kiran Bedi must use their utmost influence (?!) with Govt of UAE to release these stupid guys and bring them back to India to join their campaign! Good that this happened in Dubai and if it was in Saudi (KSA), these fools would have been hanged! He and his family, back home, should cry now - no Annas come to rescue them!

I am sure the authorities acted according to the law.

The arrested Indians should have known that there was no approval of their rally.

It is laudable to support Anna but the law of the country they live and work must be respected by them.

I hope the arrested Indians will come free after 4September.
