Reddys empire: mines in Andhra, politics in Karnataka

Bangalore, Sep 5 (IANS) The empire of G. Janardhana Reddy, who was Monday arrested for illegal mining, straddles two neighbouring southern states - iron ore mines in Andhra Pradesh and politics in Karnataka.

The 44-year-old Janardhana owns the Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) which has mining lease in Andhra Pradesh.

The OMC is alleged to have indulged in massive illegal mining in that state as well as in neighbouring areas of Karnataka, particularly in iron-ore rich Bellary district.

Bellary, about 330 km from Bangalore, is also the political base of the Reddy brothers - Janardhana, the elder G. Karunakara and the younger G. Somashekara.

The brothers hail form Andhra Pradesh where their father Chenga Reddy was a police constable.

Janardhana was tourism minister and Karunakara held the revenue portfolio in the first Bharatiya Janata Party government in Karnataka that went out on July 31 when B.S. Yeddyurappa quit as chief minister after the Lokayukta (ombudsman) indicted him for graft in an illegal mining scam.

Janardhana is a member of the legislative council while Karunakara and Somashekara are assembly members.

Janardhana, who has passed SSLC (Secondary School Leaving Certificate, equivalent to 10th standard) is the most vocal of the brothers. His wife Aruna is also a director of OMC. The couple has one daughter and one son.

Karunakara was a director of OMC but resigned from the post in 2004.

The Reddys staunch follower B. Sriramulu, whom the brothers consider to be their family member, was also on OMC board of directors. He too quit in 2008. He was health minister in the Yeddyurappa cabinet.

The Reddys' rise both in business and politics has been meteoric.

They joined BJP only in 1999 and have till now enjoyed clout that few, who are just about 10 years old in that party, can match in Karnataka.

The hold stems from the billions they raked from iron ore mining and exports, a business they entered only in 2005, after starting the OMC in 2002.

They entered the BJP and mining business when the prospects of both were on the rise.

BJP had come to power for the first time at the national level, though in alliance with many parties in 1998.

The 1999 Lok Sabha polls had put Bellary, one of the most backward Karnataka districts, on the global map as Congress president Sonia Gandhi was contesting the election for the first time from there along with family stronghold of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.

The Reddys worked for Sushma Swaraj, the fiery BJP leader who unsuccessfully took on Sonia Gandhi in Bellary, and cemented their place in the party and began dominating the district which was a Congress bastion.

The global demand for steel sent iron ore prices soaring and Reddys kitty bulging.

From riding bicycles, the Reddys began driving the latest luxury cars and moved on to owning helicopters.

Their riches helped build an enviable clout in Karnataka's BJP and also led to controversies, both in Andhra Pradesh and in this state.

@ Raman Poojari. It is also true that if BJP was at the centre and a congressman was indicted, if that person swore allegiance to BJP, then CBI would take a U-Turn too. None of th parties in India is clean. Whether BJP, Congress or you name it, all are mighty thieves, robbing the country. Have you imagined, none of the colonials have robbed India's wealth as much in 0ver 600 years as much as our own have in the last 64 years? Indians have sick minds 80% of them, 15% have no power to do anything, the 5% have migrated.

This is what is called "siasat ke shatranj ki chal." If the Reddys had quit the BJP immediately after the exit of Mr.Yeddy and/or joined Congress, the scenario today would have been completely different. Mr.Arvind Kejriwal is an example.

If Jagan accepts Soniaji as his leader and pledges to strengthen congress in AP, and brings Bellary brothers also in Congress fold to make Congress Govt. in Karnataka then CBI will do a U-turn and ask courts to permit it to withdraw the case against Reddy's.. That is what congress strategy is. Otherwise what makes Mulayam Yadav and Mayavati support congress in parliament whenever there is a need? Until CBI is made really independent, this type of misuse by Congress/Sonia family will continue. This is a warning to all looters who are with congress to to think of opposing it...Otherwise here comes CBI... after you......so we need a JAN LOK PAL BILL even CBI will come under it....JAI ANNA HAZARE

This is a plan by Yeddy and the central BJP to kick out the Reddys. That way there will be none to blackmail them and Yeddy carry on with the looting. Use and throw policy. How else would Yeddy tell the world that he will come back to become CM again?

For sure Mr. Om Puri made the statement very accurate. Look at these goons Reddy stolen all resources as well minister of BJP finally went to jail which was long due. Govt should freez all his and his family assets except family human members. Have no mercy on such person. How ruling BJP kept them to lead tourism portfolio despite knowing the fact of theft, stealing, corruption etc. Is this democractic India where people can do these acts.

THE LOOTERS ARE FROM AP AND WE POOR PEOPLE ALLOWED THEM TO LOOT AND THEY BECOME RICHER. WHAT USELESS BJP IS DONE A BIG-BLUNDER IN OUR STATE AND SPECIALLY FOR THE PEOPLE FOR BELLARY. WE ALL ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS SITUATION TODAY. There should be a comprehensive, transparent investigation and fair approach to the issue of Reddy brother's unlawful accumulation of resources in the expense of state exchequer by ruling and oppn parties alike. This is a instance of disregard to democracy, constitution, rule of land, accountability which should not move further from here. This should be condemned by all citizens of India irrespective of party affiliations.

Reddy brothers tried to hijack popularly elected govt 3-4 times due to muscle and money power that not questioned by their own party or any law of the land. They should be lodged behind the bar for quite some time with out bail and Kannadigas were very patient when they were sold Karnataka land for AP to extract mines illegally.BJP's most of the ministers who were the cabinet members of EDDy either waiting for JAIL or in the jail.So BJP govt of Karnataka should be sacked out rightly. It is ironic that even though LOKAYUKTA mentioned in his report that BEllary not belonged to Karnataka but it was called as BELLARY REPUBLIC!!!!!!But Nikamma BJP govt of Karnataka harbored these criminals for quite some time so that the other's (BJP state/Central)leaders might be shared bounty of what REddy accumulated. Therefore we demand an CBI/CURRENT SUPRIME Court jutice to probe this ugly episode.

The reddy's would not have seen this day if they were not into politics. The money they got from Bellary's soil made them rich to buy BJP seats. The money earned from the soil should have spent on developments of states and the mother earth would have blessed them. They went against the nature and bought power. They destroyed mineral wealth of Bellary and only three got rich and rest breath the Bellary dust. They created a dirty political history in Karnataka. They made Eddy sleepless and played with sentiments of BJP voters all over karnataka.I wish they are sent to Tihar Jail for 2 years.
