Despite CM's warning, students forced to clean school toilets in Shivamogga

Shivamogga, Dec 28 (IANS): Despite the repeated warning of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of strict action, another incident of students engaged in school toilet cleaning has come to light in Shivamogga district of Karnataka.

The incident has proved to be a major embarrassment for the Congress government as Minister for Education Madhu Bangarappa hails from the district.

The students studying at Guddada Neralakere village in the limits of Komaranahalli gram panchayat were allegedly engaged in cleaning of toilets.

The video of students cleaning the school toilets went viral on social media on Thursday.

The Dalit Sangharsha Samithi (DSS) submitted a complaint in this regard with the Assistant Commissioner, Satyanarayana. It is alleged that the head master Shankarappa and other teachers had engaged the school children to clean toilets.

The parents and activists have demanded action against the accused teachers.

On December 23, the Karnataka Police arrested the headmistress of a government school for allegedly making the children clean toilets in Bengaluru.

The arrest was made following the complaint by the Block Education Officer (BEO) Anjinappa in this regard with the Byadarahalli police station. An incident of school children being asked to clean a septic tank in the premises of the school in Kolar district was also reported recently.

I'm not interested what you did once upon a time. When I send my child to school I'm interested in my child getting an education. I will teach my kidhow to cook clean wash and be self reliant elsewhere. I don't need my kid washing A LOO OF OTHER KIDS PEE AND POOP REMNANTS. THAT is NOT WHY I SEND MY CHILD TO SCHOOL..... HE CANNOT BE EXPOSED TO HAZARDOUS TOXIC BLEACH DISINFECTANTS AND CLEANING AGENTS. .. Which CHILDREN SHOULD NOT BE IN CONTACT WITH ANYWAY. Flavian. Iv no idea if you even have kids in this day and age but please exit this discussion if YOU PLAN TO COMPARE THE OLD DAYS SCHOOL LIFE AND CHILDREN'S LIVES NOW. CHILDREN NOW ARE LUCKY IF THEY HAVE A TREE LEFT IN THEIR SCHOOL PREMISES. forget about gardening. . And FYI. I'm not bloated in my head and neither do i have gold silver or platinum spoons. I'M JUST VERY PRAGMATIC.

If all the children without discrimination are made to clean toilets then there is nothing wrong in it. Cleaning make our children humble and down to earth. however, they should given glouse, proper face masks and strictly no use of hazardous chemicals.. if the work is properly distributed, a child may get that work once in three to four months.

Let Govt. allot some funds to clean the toilets of schools so that students be kept free from this work. Otherwise no other alternative.

Why is cleaning toilet a negative thing. Students should be taught cleaning the toilet that they use. Unless there is fund to hire a cleaner, whats wrong in students cleaning the toilet that they use. Isn't it a life lesson?

Very sad. Poor children. These abuses are happen at many places in our country. It is advisable to frequently check on your children as there have been reports of students being mistreated in various ways by some schools in Mangalore also. Don't just blindly take teachers words as truth.

I don't understand what is wrong in making to clean the school toilets which is part of keeping your surrounding clean but iam against not providing proper safety gear like rubber shoes, gloves, mask and using harmful chemicals as it will harm kids skin and fumes affect their respiratory system.

Cleaning the school premises including toilets is mandatory in Japanese schools. This helps children learn the chores at an early age. There are no Janitors in Japan for this work.

Veena, one more thing. This is NOT JAPAN AND WE ARE NOT JAPANESE. AND WE DEFINITELY NEED JANITORS IN SCHOOLS IN INDIA. THEY DO THEIR JOB. THE CHILDREN DO WHAT THEY ARE SENT TO SCHOOL TO DO and that's a major reason OUR CHILDREN AND NOT JAPANESE CHILDREN are HEADING WORLD organizations and governments.

Veena, Brian, Oh, absolutely! Japan, with their school kids cleaning classrooms, clearly has a good point. In that sense who needs professional cleaners or a system that takes care of public spaces? Next time when you see a pile of something on the road, your first instinct should be to go and grab a broom and start a cleaning party. Let's force everyone to become sanitation superheroes.

How convenient. Your desire to prove that everything the Congress government does is fine.... Is ok. BUT, don't talk nonsense. These little children are CHILDREN. NOT TOILET CLEANERS. TEACHING HYGIENE IS ONE THING. MAKING THEM GET DOWN AND DIRTY AND SCRUB TOILETS IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL DURING COVID TIMES IS ANOTHER THING. Parents send their children to school to get educated. NOT TO BE SERVANTS OF THE INSTITUTION THEY GO TO. Shame on people like you that justify this disgusting and traumatic abuse of innocent children.
