Udupi, Sep 11: “Work or business is essential but the entrepreneurs need to have some amount of social concerns in them. They shouldn’t create any situation which is disturbing to the environment around them”, averred Dr B M Hegde, district president of Jaya Srikrishna Parisara Premi Samiti and retired vice-chancellor of Manipal University.

He was addressing the gathering at a public meet organized in the auditorium of Hotel Kidiyoor on Saturday September 10 to create Government awareness about the destruction caused by the establishment of UPCL near Nandikoor.

On behalf of the Samiti(committee) Hegde put forth certain demands to the officials of UPCL. The firm first needs to use quality technology to carry out their work without causing any harm to the locals and should form an environment protection committee including the local representatives in it, he demanded. The other demands of the samiti included providing employment to locals, to re-establish the naga bana and such religious constructions destroyed by the company for its work, providing 24-hour electricity supply to undivided DK district among others.

He warned the UPCL officials that if the demands of the samiti are not met at the earliest they would hold intense protests.

Samoti founder Thonse Jayakrishna Shetty said that CM Sadananda Gowda and environment ministers must visit the place and go around with the locals to see the condition created by UPCL workers and find out a suitable solution for the same.

Ramachandar Baikampady welcomed the gathering. K P Jagadeesha Adhikari spoke on the occasion. Shekara Gujjarabettu compered the programme. Divakar Shetty, Dananjay Shetty, Krishna Shetty among others were present.

Here we have Professor B.M. Hegde again voicing the feelings of people. I join several others in complimenting him on his bold statements. Industry is indeed necessary for bettering the lot of people and providing jobs to the needy. However this should not be at the expense of eliminating nature and fauna. India is rich in fauna and flora and this needs to be preserved at all costs. Professor Hegde has not minced words while making his statement. Plants and nature cannot speak and people like Professor Hegde take the opportunity to emphasize the need to save plant life.

Kudos to you Professor Hegde for not mincing words while standing firm with regard to your concepts of PRESERVATION OF LIFE.
