Puttur: Lone wild tusker tramples upon plantations,  destroys crops

Daijiworld Media Network - Puttur

Puttur, Jan 3: A wild tusker invaded a plantation belonging to one Kumar Pernaje and caused huge crop damage early on Wednesday, Jan 3.

It is believed that it was a lone tusker from the Anegundi sanctuary on the Puttur-Sullia-Kerala border.

It is also believed that the elephant that had separated from its herd from Kanakamajalu entered Pernaje from Mugeri and moved backwards towards Mugeri while invading plantations in Mandekolu, Mururu, Bellippadi and Panjikallu areas.

The tusker invaded the gardens and destroyed a number of crops including banana plantations and jackfruit trees following which the surrounding villagers expressed worry.

The forest department officials have instructed the farmers not to go to the plantations in the night.

This confrontation between man and nature is only going to get worse... Forests hardly are left with anything worthwhile for the mammoth animals to feed on... What else they will do but for wandering away to feed their massive stomachs?... Afforestation is filled with acasia trees which are absolutely no use to anyone... It is same like mother with dried milk stoves an empty nipple to keep the baby calm temporarily... It has to be perfect shake hand between man and the nature... Anything less will lead to one over the other...

Estate owners surrounding the reserved forests around these areas are in dire straits due to regular wild animal intrusion; this problem will only exacerbate as the summer season starts due to very obvious reasons 😔!! Just a matter of time that jumbos sneak into the city side as well too....in search of water and food 🥝!!🙏
