Udupi, Sep 13: A tipper that was used for transporting crushed stones caught fire, probably due to short circuit near Shivanagar in Hejmady, Padubidri, on national highway 66 in the district on Monday September 12 afternoon.

The tipper was returning after emptying its load of crushed stone at Konaje, Mangalore, to its base at Belman, Halekatte, when the accident occurred.

Tipper driver, Basappa, sensed that flames had risen in the rear portion of his vehicle, after smoke filled his cabin. He immediately stopped the vehicle and jumped to safety.

The ill-fated tipper belongs to Nagesh Poojary from Halekatte village. The intensity of flames was so high that locals could not approach the truck to undertake rescue operations. Fire brigade vehicle belonging to Udupi Power Corporation Ltd came to the spot later, and succeeded in extinguishing the fire. By then, the vehicle had been completely destroyed.

A report has been registered in Padubidri police station relating to the incident.
