Udupi, Sep 13: Kartik, a seventh standard student of Kotatattu government higher primary school in the district, has bagged the second prize in the state-level category announced at the national level Inspire Awards contest. The contest was organized by the department of science and technology.

Kartik is the son of Krishna Kotian and Shyamala couple. The hydraulic JCB (backhoe) designed by the student does not need fuel and runs on water.

Kartik was picked for the award at the national level demonstration of science models for Inspire Awards, held at New Delhi from August 14 to 16 this year.

Kartik was felicitated for his achievement at a function organized here by the zilla panchayat on Monday September 12, by ZP president Katapadi Shankar Poojary. The backhoe designed by the student, which picked mud from a utensil and emptied it into another one repeatedly, was demonstrated at the programme. Kartik, giving details about his invention, said that the machine runs mainly on eight syringes and four drip pipes.

Out of 74 student participants from Karnataka, Pratibha from Hassan won the first prize at the state level, for her model of walking stick with rest chair, informed deputy director of public instruction, Nagendra Madhyastha.

MLA, Gopal Bhandary, and several other dignitaries were present.

I don't know whether the Kartik's model could be copied by another student of other district which has been picked up in district level inspire award science exhibition held in Ramgarh. Deputy Commissioner's office is looking into the issue of copied model of Kartik.
