Puttur, Jan 8: Laxmi Hegde, aged 90, faced abandonment by her seven children due to old-age-related sickness. Left in the care of an orphanage, she passed away on Sunday due to a cardiac arrest.
Her children did not attend her funeral, leaving the orphanage management to conduct her final rites.
Residing near Ilanthila of Uppinangady, Laxmi Hegde sought help from the police as her children neglected her in her old age. When contacted, the children expressed helplessness, leading the then station officer of Uppinangady, Nandakumar, to admit Laxmi to Bharat Sevashrama at Kanyana. Nandakumar, treating her as his own mother, regularly visited the orphanage to inquire about her well-being.
After Laxmi's demise from a cardiac arrest, the orphanage attempted to reach her children, but received no response. Unable to contact police officer Nandakumar, who had previously cared for Laxmi, the orphanage administration, following its rules, conducted the final rites for Laxmi Hegde.
