Meghalaya Congress Confident of Weathering Trust Vote

Shillong, Sep 13 (IANS): The ruling Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) government Tuesday exuded confidence over facing Wednesday's no-confidence motion moved by the opposition Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

"We are ready to face it (the no-confidence motion) and the coalition partners have assured us of their support during the motion," Congress Legislature Party secretary Ronnie V. Lyngdoh told IANS.

Assembly Speaker Charles Pyngrope fixed Wednesday for debating the no-confidence motion.

Lyngdoh said the Congress has issued a three-line party whip to all party legislators, asking them to be present in the assembly when the motion is taken up.

Chief Minister Mukul Sangma held an emergent MUA parliamentary meeting Monday night to discuss how to counter the NCP-sponsored move.

"We have no reasons to say no to your no-confidence and we will face it and the government is not afraid of it," Mukul said.

Leader of Opposition Conrad K. Sangma said the no-confidence motion was warranted since the government has failed on all development fronts, including maintaining law and order and continuous financial crisis.

The move has been supported by the entire opposition, barring independent legislator Manas Chaudhuri and suspended NCP legislator Adolf Lu Hitler R. Marak.

"Our intention is not to topple this government and we don't even have the numbers, but the no-confidence motion will highlight the various lapses of the government," Conrad said.

The Congress, which has 28 legislators, enjoys the support of nine United Democratic Party (UDP) legislators, two of the Hill State People's Democratic Party, four independents and one Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement member. The NCP has 15 members in the 60-seat assembly.

I think Mr.Lambor has a very valid point here. The state has been in financial crisis since its statehood. Why? Its a very difficult question to answer. Its indeed a fact that misutilization of funds were there and unfair distribution of schemes, facilities etc.were very prevalent. Now with the introduction of RTI and Media playing a very active role in disseminating authentic information to the people, things have changed. Remember Rome was not built in a day.The present government to my knowledge is doing its best to rectify things and bring about a change. They should be given a chance and some time for this.Tabling a NCM will only hinder development and keep legislators busy in non productive activities, thus resulting in loosing focus on vital issues pertaining to development.NCM is in no way a solution to any kind of problem but a problem in itself.Welfare of the state is what should be the common interest of the people be it the ones in the ruling party or the opposition.

The no-confidence motion brought about by the opposition in the assembly session is a totally negative response from the oppositions side. If the opposition is concerned about bringing a NCM for lapses in development aspect, law & order & financial crisis, they should understand that even if they sit on the other side of the park, they should remember that during their one year tenure in the MPA government their contribution to development, law & order & financial position were in a much worse condition. With the taking over of the MUA government & its alliance the government has eventually balance the trade offs in a much professional way.

Talk about development if we introspect wisely the percentage of utilization of central & state sponsored schemes have been rather worth appreciating. Law & order is an issue of National Security- whenever there was a crisis the government have put their heads together to tackle the problem intelligently without the loss of innocent lives. Financial aspect is a broad spectrum and the opposition should know that indicators pertaining to financial management there will be imbalances as the economies of the whole world are under a recession mode. Also it is to note that the state has been running on deficit budget since its statehood. So dear opposition suggest means and ways to solve the crisis and do not be part of the problem.
